Hi all,

I've just received an Elan Cybra from Ebay and am having some trouble getting it connected. Here are the details.

I have a grey Stentura serial cable from my old Stentura 400 (200?) SRT and a serial to USB converter. I've connected those and I've tried TX bolt mode and Stentura mode. If I hold the second and third grey buttons from the left on the machine, I get the realtime connection icon show up on the LCD screen on the machine, which, according to the manual, means that "communications are successfully established." When I'm in TX bolt mode, I always get the green button on plover if the machine is plugged in and the port selected to the machine. In Stentura mode, after loading, I always get the red button.

Is it just a matter of playing with the bandwidth at this point? Or should I not have to work with the settings at all? Do I have the right cables and connection procedure?

Thanks for your help!

I think I have more relevant information and maybe another symptom of the problem. According to the last post on this thread, http://plover.stenoknight.com/2014/01/plover-v258-released.html the port setting should come up with COM. Instead, I'm getting "/dev/tty.PL2303-000012FD". I'm pretty sure that I have the correct drivers installed, since it will only even communicate through one USB port on my mac and because it's the same cord combination I used with my Stentura SRT.

I've also now tried every baudrate from 50 to 19200 on both the Stentura and the TX bolt setting. I've checked all of the previous posts about Elan Cybra and it seems I'm doing everything right.

Thoughts?

I also have the Elan Cybra, and have no trouble with it under Linux, in either Stentura or TXBolt mode.
Note that the serial port for me is USB0 or USB1 but it doesn't appear until I plug the cord in to the computer.
I have had a couple of working cables "go bad" on me though.  Usually wiggling the wire in the connector on one end or the other is enough to fix it for awhile, but the cords do seem temperamental.

Oh and I have to be sure I'm in the group that owns the USB connection (plugdev on Linux), perhaps there's something similar on Mac?

But if you're using the same cable that works on another machine, I don't think any of these could be the issue.

Actually, the reason that I had to get a new machine is because the other one took a bad fall from its tripod. There was physical damage to the connection on the machine itself, so I thought that that was the only problem, but I suppose the cord could have damage too, even though I can't see any damage. So I went to RadioShack and bought a new serial cable by Gigaware just now. I plugged it in and started plover back up and tried the whole process again. This time, instead of the TX Bold mode staying on, it's doing the "connecting" circle, but still not writing.

I don't know what you mean by "I'm in the group that owns the USB connection." I've never heard of anything like that for a mac.

Be aware also that not all serial to USB cables will work either.  I think it has to do with the chipset they use.  I've been lucky with the ones I've ordered online so far, but others have reported problems.

I was afraid that might be the case. I'll return the serial cable to RadioShack today. Is there anything else I can try before buying a stenograph serial cable? Is there a way I could figure out if the cable to my old machine works at all? Or is it most likely the cable causing problems?

Oh, sorry. You said serial to USB. I'm sure that the one I have works since I used it with my old serial cable and machine.
