Spanish Melani system in realtime

Hello, in case it's useful, tomorrow I'll use Plover with Melani
system adapted to be used in Spanish, to produce captions in real
time. I'll work, deppending on the event duration, starting at 12 and
finishing at 15 hours, and following from 18 to 21 hours in Spain
(Madrid timezone). Other parts of the event will be captioned by other
people. I'll use this system:

Unfortunately we cannot document the system due to time, but the code

Hello, thanks for your interest. The event finished and Plover worked as expected, I think it is an amazing program. I discovered that a word was not added in the dictionary and this produced one of the mistakes in output, but it is fixed and tomorrow I will push it to the repo. I use Plover some months ago for captioning in real time most of the days, but this event was available for public in Internet and I shared it in case someone was interested in the system to get an idea of the output.

I wasn't able to see the first part, but I did catch up later in the afternoon around 18hs. First of all, let me congratulate you for your work, I'm sure doing realtime transcription is far from easy, and overall I was able to follow the speakers with the transcription to see if I could spot a few errors ;)

Initially I saw a delay, I don't know if it was intended or just a streaming problem on my end, eventually I didn't notice it anymore. I was able to spot just a few errors (for example: "luprotección", "priorizmente", "walter" -no capital letter-) and maybe other few words not transcribed (for example "sermón" was omitted on "sermón dominical"). I saw too that around 18:10hs the transcription froze and for a moment there were no transcription at all, to finally appear again.

Other than that, it was an amazing job.

Congratulations once more, to you and your team! I'm happy to see Plover being used like this!

Hi Eliseo, thanks for following speech and transcription, it"s not easy at all to pay attention. I omitted the word sermón before dominical since I was not sure about what the person said. Lu protección: lu was my mistake: I pressed o with a and the expected result appeared, that is, u. Priorizmente is an missing word in the dictionary, added yesterday at the end of the event.

The first delay was produced since I forgot to uncheck a punctuation dictionary used for captioning a program in television. There the system used by them requires to send the text manually pressing Enter. We have a punctuation dictionary to do this automatically when commas or dot are pressed, and I have to remember this to unchec (deactivate) this dictionary for other kind of events. I started my work and the technician called via telephone to a friend (we are vision impaired, I"m totally blind), and so we needed that someone informs if something is not going as expected. Then I disabled the dictionary quickly to follow. I suppose that it was what you see as a delay. Sometimes other think that happens is that the technician needs to refresh his browser to make captions to appear. This happened too and my friend adviced him to refresh.

Thanks, it's difficult, especially when different kinds of events
happens in a short period of time. For example, this morning I'll work
in the usual TV program and in the evening, in a meeting of a bank for
captions in real time and later it has to be re-transcripted or fixed
to provide it. So tomorrow I'll work in a prerecorded audio and later
in the TV program. I'll try to remember to use the right dictionary
for punctuations :)

Hi Noelia! I've just took a look at your captions. Great job! I know It's not easy to keep up with the Spanish pace.

I have a question for you:

- What is your current average WPM output? How many months/years (and how many hours per day) of experience where needed for you to get where you are in terms of fluency/speed/accuracy? Do you think it is still improvable?

Let me briefly explain why I am very interested in your feedback:

I am a full-time translator who currently sees stenotyping as a very interesting way to save his wrists from an increasing RSI-related pain (despite using an ergonomic Sculpt keyboard). I shall change my QWERTY to something more ergonomic before it's too late and I aim at something that allows me to be at least as productive as I am now (around 80 WPM max.) on the long run (hopefully not too long). I'll change to a more ergonomic keyboard layout (e.g., a BEAKL layout) and/or stenotyping for most of my inputs. It’s hard to find resources in Portuguese, but having your feedback would definitely help me decide if I should dig in more (considering that speeds of Spanish and Portuguese methods would be similar).

Hello José Pedro, please to meet you here.
If you suffer RSI, I think you should definitely explore stenotype or
other methods to work, even if you decide to combine them and not use
a unique method.
I don't know my average speed in terms of WPM. It deppends on
vocabulary, the fluency and clarity of the speaker, if it's a topic
that I know well, and even if I slept well the last night or if sound
is also clear or has some echo etc.
I think that the experience and number of hours to reach this or other
results may differ a lot between different people too. I studied two
years learning Stenokey with predefined abbreviations, and just about
two months to learn Melani system with a trainer to practice my self
later, but for me this last system was better in terms of speed quite
soon, specially since it's customizable and not just syllabic (in
short).
In general, I haven't received different feedback about my speed many
years ago, thogh I use the few comments that I receive to improve my
accuracy and we continue enhancing dictionaries to increase speed,
answering to the question regarding possible improvements. Accuracy
can even deppend on the machine, so, if I use a machine which makes
more probable mistakes than other even with the same model (Stentura),
I pay attention to my fingers to avoid them.

That definitely boosts my willingness to learn how to stenotype.

Regarding RSI, I think you're right when you mention that the combination of input methods should be beneficial (in order to avoid excessive stress).

You say that it's easier and quicker to learn a second system, right? That is interesting. Allow me to ask you about something related to that: Do you think that it's also applicable when you're learning another system, but for a second language? My aim is to learn how to stenotype both in Portuguese and English. What is your advice? Should I learn one first? Start both at the same type? Choose methods that use the same key layout?

Well, I can talk just about my own experience. Ihaven't learnt
stenotype for a second language, but knowing something can make easy
to learn another related thing.
I worked with stenokey and Stentura at the same time, Stentura in the
morning when I studied it with my teacher, and stenokey in other
moments during the same months, and of course, at the same time,
typing in the computer. So I think that if you want you may start
learning even simultaneously stenotype with two different languages.
about layouuth, maybe easier to learn with the same layout, a
multilingual method, but I'm nbot sure.
