At CES yesterday, MakerBot announced three new printer models. They have some glitzy ease of use features (e.g. wifi, webcam for remote watching), incremental improvements in capability (some are bigger and faster), and are really expensive ($1.4k to $6.5k). They all seem to use PLA filament and not ABS (our Replicators use either).  There will also be a new desktop app for operating MakerBots, including our old Replicators.  (story at Techcrunch)

I had some trouble with the Makerbot Desktop 3.5 version in printing a 1-layer leveling model. There seems to be a release note on errors trying to execute a print on these kinds of models, so I would stick to 3.4x for the older 1st Gen Replicator (I have a Replicator 1st gen  (dual)).  It's not easy to get the older releases of the software frm the Makerbot site (as well as trying to get 32-bit vs 64-bit).  I'll dig up the link for 3.4 if there's interest.

Cheers,

note: I learned most of what I know about operating 3D printers from Dan B.!

Dan,
I have not used Makerbot Desktop. I have used MakerWare a lot, but I have not updated it in a long time. My version is 2.4.1.24. I do not print from it via USB because interference (EMI, RFI) sometimes causes the printer to stop printing. After I switched to printing from SD card that never happened again. Somebody has archived all the older versions of Makerbot software, so they are out there somewhere.

And I am using Makerware 2.4.1.62 and sometimes ReplicatorG 004r24. I
have not looked for updates so they may be available. I agree with
Chris (mostly).

Sorry for the slow response. I am really behind in e-mail.
