Can algae blooms be used for oil production?

Read and respond to the post here: https://publiclab.org/notes/Ag8n/10-16-2018/can-algae-blooms-be-used-for-oil-production

Many algae blooms show up in the oceans. But, algae blooms are also being used by alternate energy groups to produce synthetic oil. Is there a way to combine the two?

Thank you.

Hi Liz,

I have no practical experience in algae cultivation, but I have had some contact with a group that works with it.

As I remember, it is necessary to control the variety of algae that grow.

Cultivation in a saline environment can be a strategy to control the diversity of algae in the culture medium.

Some varieties produce oils as an energy storage strategy.

And so, a strategy to increase production is to generate a lack of some nutrient (starvation) to stimulate the algae to produce oils.

But then the challenge is to concentrate the algae and produce an algae biomass with a sufficient concentration to make the oil extraction viable.

And for the extraction it is necessary to break the algae cell wall to release the oil.

But another alternative for the energy use of algae biomass could be its use for the production of biogas.

Best Regards

Markos
