Hi, all -- these folks (aside from incorrectly thinking that I'm a Dr.) are interested in a chapter about mobile spectrometry for health. I'm not sure I have either the bandwidth or the expertise, but if there are others on the list who have either, i'm happy to make an introduction and perhaps co-author?

We brainstormed on this a bit on the organizers list, and Don suggested:

> I guess the applications of DIY spectroscopy in mobile health / biology are still mostly speculative at this point; but maybe writing this chapter could be done quickly in the "interview" mode:  we get a bunch of experts to brainstorm with us around possible uses for this technology in their (bio/medical) field, and write up their responses -- either as relatively straight transcript of the email exchange, or in summary form.  This might result in quickly generating a lot of neat new ideas and connections in the biomed community, too ...

Dear Dr.  Warren:

We are serving as editors of a book on mobile health (mHealth) technologies. Your work in this area is widely respected and we invite you to contribute a chapter on “mobile spectrometer” (or a related topic). The book will be published by Humana Press as part of their Methods in Molecular Biology series that presents biomedical and life science research methods and protocols which provides details for carrying out similar work and research.

Your chapter can be based on and use material from your recent work or publications in the field and it should provide sufficient detail to allow a full understanding of your technology.

We hope that you will be able to contribute a chapter for this book, which will advance the field of mHealth and biomedical research. To confirm your intent to write a chapter, please respond by 15 May 2013 and we will forward more detail about the publication requirements. If you have questions, please let us know.

Best regards,

...

Hello list--

Although (very) new to this list and spectrometry, I do blog on mHealth and nextgen healthcare at UXHealth. If there's still an opportunity, I'd be happy to assist since I have some knowledge of the mHealth space. Did anyone move forward with the publisher's request?

I haven't heard from other folks, but I think we'd need someone who's willing to be the lead on this before moving forward with the publisher -- i could mainly offer some support but not be a primary author. I did respond asking if a group of us could submit and they think that sounds fine.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

By taking "the lead" on this do you mean...

1) contacting the publisher and getting more details?
2) assembling and wrangling the team for the paper?
3) add to current ideas and organize more brainstorming for paper?
4) create an outline + first draft?
5 push through/edit collaborative secondary drafts?
6) all of these?

If so, I would be willing potentially to take the lead on this, assuming the deadline isn't imminent. However, since I'm really just learning about spectrometry, and just received my first DIY kit from Public Lab, I'd never position myself as the spectrometrist lead (just a budding enthusiast!). I can speak to a lot of issues around mHealth, not as a clinician, but as a consultant and someone who's helped to research, build, and prototype a variety of mHealth-centric products, and knows a good bit about healthcare, the emerging mHealth market, and the device sector.

Let me know if you'd like to discuss further.

Regards,
Charles

I can do #1, and do introductions, but yes, i don't think i have the bandwidth to tackle the rest of the list, sorry! If you're interested, I can take the next steps, but if nobody is up for it, that's fine -- i just wanted to put the opportunity out there in case it sparked some interest.

Jeff

Jeff,

Sounds like a great opportunity for exploring other (non-obvious) areas for advancing spectrometry apps.

So, I'm definitely game for leading on #2-6. I'd need your help on the spectro side, of course.

Hi Amir,

Thanks for your reply. I think both of your suggestions are good and valuable ones for spectrometric tools. Although  "mHealth" is a pretty broad catch-all term, #2 is more directly relevant for a chapter on mHealth since one area of the field is focused on capturing (via wearable sensors) and measuring physiological phenomena directly. The captured and crunched data will then, hopefully, enable the device wearer or caregiver to act on that information. Let's definitely stay in touch, as I'm sure your expertise far exceeds mine.

I'm still interested in getting more details from Jeff Warren, when he has them.

Jeff: have you heard anything further from the publisher, especially re. deadlines and target length of paper?

Thanks much.
Charles

Hi,
I'm at Ben-Gurion university of the Negev, Israel. I'm trying to think of ways to use the spectrometer to gain information in various fields, be it Biology, Geology or Chemistry. Thu at the moment I am not sure it really is feasible without an additional set-up: exciting laser, optical dousing system or other.

I think that even if the chapter won't happen, it is important there will be a paper describing the spectrometer so that it could be cited when needed.  as for the chapter, I think it should cover espesially two topics:

1. Use of the spectrometer to monitor the environment for health risks.
2. Use of the spectrometer to monitor human well-being.

What do you think?

Amir

Hi Amir,

Thanks for your note, your background, and kind offer for assistance. I'll certainly need it!

I'm waiting to hear back from Jeff Warren about next steps with the publisher. In the meantime, where are you based and attending school? I'm in NYC.

Charles

Hi Charles,

I am now finalizing my M.Sc. thesis in physics (Raman molecular spectroscopy) and would be happy to try and help, as with everyone else, time is a major limiting factor, but I would be happy to try and help, at the least with the physical background needed.
