glyphboxes for glyphs that are drawarea size-dependent

I was putting together a heat map plotter today andI would like to be able to provide a single glyph box around the entire map. At the moment I don't see how that is possible. Is this the case?
It seems that the drawarea knowledge is not available at the time the NewGlyphBoxes call is made.
