Powerfulbuilt-in reports, like Burndown and Resource Overview, can help you gain insights, communicate information to stakeholders, and achieve results. Built-in reports help project stakeholders visualize data to gain insights across projects and make more informed decisions.
Currently our company is trying to implement interactive tasks list with custom columns. These custom columns are the text1 or text2 columns that can be added to a project in project professional as well as inside the online view. Entering data in either the online view or the desktop project professional then publishing and checking in does not show any updates to the other when it is opened after the other version has been closed. We are currently using the PWA server version of online and project professional on our desktops.
Our goal is for others with assigned tasks to change indicators in these custom columns from "X" for new, to "S" for started, "D" for done and the changes backflush into the server and thus show up in the desktop project professional. I have looked thru all of the administrative settings looking for something that is not activated that should be and activated that shouldn't be, perhaps I missed something so wide open to any and all suggestions.
These custom columns will need to be Enterprise Custom Fields created in PWA > PWA Settings > Enterprise Custom Fields and Lookup Tables. Once created, in PWA, start project desktop and connect to the PWA instance then you will be able to add the enterprise custom fields into the view. Here are some posts that will help:
Paul, the information you shared previously worked very well to get the custom columns to talk between project professional and the web app version in the project center. It was easier to set them up than it was to update all the schedules :)
I still seem to be hung up getting things flowing for an assignee to see their assignments in the "Tasks" screen of the web app. For a bit more detail, we have multiple projects feeding into the master. Our hope is that a resource can sign onto the web app and see all their tasks as they would in a task view with the master opening. At the moment, don't seem to be getting but a handful of the tasks out of 1 schedule then none of the data in the now enterprise custom columns.
Paul, Seem to be making some good headway. I now get 4 of the 6 columns showing data on the task view under the "My assignment" enterprise view. I have confirmed all 6 custom columns are set up the same with the "roll down setting, unless manual" which is my only option besides no. I republished the project and still don't have data showing in the last 2 columns.
Great to hear that you're making good progress. Regarding the two fields not showing the values, did you happen to have Project Professional already open and connected to the PWA instance whilst making these changes to the Enterprise Custom Fields? If so, close down Project Professional, launch it again, open the project and publish it. Once that completes in the PWA queue, try the Tasks page again.
Paul, that seemed to work, had apparently 2 issues, 1 as you described and a second one that was hard to pickup on. The last few columns when I inserted them, didn't insert the column that was highlighted apparently because I hit enter instead of purposely left clicking on the one to insert. Detection of this was difficult because I had a very similar named field for enterprise and non-enterprise, example "Fab (E)" is an enterprise and the system kept selecting (when I hit enter) Fab E with a line thru the "E" indicating it was not an enterprise field.
It seems even though the system seems to be working as designed, if my test user makes a change to one of the custom enterprise columns in the web app "Task" view (my assignments) it doesn't backflush even thought the test user clicks submit all changed tasks, the project manager approves the changes. The secondary is that the "Task" view remains as changed on its view and the project in the web app and project professional remain as they were, aka not showing the submitted and approved changes.
The custom field the end user is editing from the Tasks page is the assignment level. In Project Desktop, open that project, split the (View tab > Details check box and select the Task Usage view). Select the task in the Gantt Chart view where a user has updated the field value then in the Task Usage view below insert the same task level custom fields. You will see on the assignment row where the resource is - the field values will match what the user has updated them to if they are accepted by the Status Manager.
I'm not seeing what I was hoping, expecting to see. Please look at attachment. I did the split screen as you mentioned previously and do see in the task usage view the custom fields and can see what changed. What I was expecting to see is the data change on the original line w/o the project manager having to physically change it themselves. It there a way to make it fully backflush? I circled in red the two points of my inquiry, the task usage screen which has an "S" in the column from the assigned resource and then the project view which does not show the changed data.
This is how that works. The resource "TEST Project" has "S" for the Weld field at the assignment level. The other resource "PDC Shop" that is assigned to the same task could have a different value for the Weld field at the assignment level, for example "A". With 2 different text values at the assignment level for the one task, which value would be displayed at the Task level Weld field? If the Weld field needs to be the same at the assignment level for all resources, set this at the Task level and roll it down to the assignment level like the Mach and Spec fields appear to be set up.
Microsoft Project is one of the leading and most widely used software products for project management. The application is designed to support project professionals such as project planners and project managers to develop a project schedule, the essential document on which a project is founded upon, throughout the entire project life cycle.
It is important to point out that in addition to these two versions, the Microsoft Project software product is available in the so called on-premises, and as an online version with different features and pricing plans.
The Standard version of Microsoft Project is fully equipped with the essential features and functionalities to support project professionals with managing their projects end-to-end. It comes as a desktop application and is designed to be installed and operated on a single PC in a local environment.
In addition to the above-mentioned features, it additionally supports resource management, board view, submission of time sheets and can be synchronized with the Online and Server version of Project, meaning that files created or changed in these versions of Project can be updated.
But, what about companies and organization that prefer to use the Standard and Professional Project tool by Microsoft and keep their data inhouse in secure closed-desktop based environment?
Both the Standard and Professional version of Microsoft Project save the project plans and all data associated with the project as .mpp files, that can later be shared with the different project participants.
Through its 26 views and built-in filter catered to the different roles and to the needs of the various profile of stakeholders, project participants are able to quickly navigate to the needed information, analyze data, as well as create detailed reports as in MS project.
Additionally featuring a unique Task Update collaboration functionality that enables two-way collaboration and progress updates on tasks between the project managers and the project participants in the organization, enables Seavus Project Viewer to further improve the project communication and information exchange between the stakeholders.
By aligning the software architecture inline to the explicit needs of the participants involved in the project and adopting a project viewer that works as a companion tool to MS Project, organizations are able to make the most effective use of their resources and save costs on additional MS project licenses and server expenses.
With all participants having a detailed overview of their tasks, assignments, and project progress, as well as a structured workflow of sending/receiving feedback between the project participants, communication and collaboration stand to be notably improved.
Microsoft Project 2021 Standard is perfectly suited for managing your project operations. In comparison, the Microsoft Project Professional 2021 version provides extra features such as the resource management and wider collaboration options to synchronize your project data between the Online and/or server version, as well as add the benefit of having greater compatibility of working with the rest of the Office apps.
When downloading visio and project (for the first time ever) there is a weird DVD format that gets downloaded. Idk why it's not just an exe file. But when it's like this you have to open the downloaded file and then you get a dvd drive which I guess is like a .dmg on Mac so it makes sense but it doesn't have a name of the driver, just DVD drive F: 16....
May I know where did you download Visio and Project 2021 from and is it an official source? Generally, if you have a Visio and Project plan, you can sign in to Office.com and install Visio from the Apps & devices section of My account. If you want to have more control over how the subscription version of Visio is deployed to your users, you can do the following instead:
I am attempting to use MS Project Professional 2013 to send out automated outlook e-mails the week before a task is due among other automated e-mail tasks. Is this possible with the desktop program or will I need something like MS Project Server or the MS Project web app to achieve such a task?
