JDownloader is, by far, the best way to download any video from YouTube and anywhere else on the Internet for that matter. Unlike many other download utilities, the quality is perfect as there is no recompression. It can download the highest resolution videos YouTube has to offer and, best of all, it is completely free and open-source.

I thought that was the answer, but aside from recently self-implemented restrictions, it found out that is has the same flaw as other sites and plugins for Firefox that I've recently tried: it is able to get a video in the highest resolution, but downloads it with a lesser audio quality that there is. And I know this because I can with compare in spectrogam a downloaded file with a file containing a what-you-hear recording of the same content played from the source location [as it turns out, what I hear on YouTube has usually 20 kHz, and various plugins save files with only 16kHz]

You get exactly the video that plays in the browser. If you want the highest res available, you have to make sure you select that resolution in the player before seeking to the end to get the last segment number.

EDIT: Also the documentation makes it look like it's only grabbing the highest quality video...is there an easy way to restrict it to a specific quality instead of always looking for the highest? I am not blessed with a 100TB NAS for storage purposes, alas.

Some duder made GB-Video-Grabber that I'd recommend and it works quite well for bulk downloads however it will only download in highest quality (you can modify the source code though and build a version for another quality).
