The Office of External Affairs was created in February 2006 to bring together units responsible for influencing public policy and opinion and strengthening the university's reputation and the perceptions people hold of it. The units include the offices responsible for government relations at the federal, state and regional levels; media relations and communications; marketing and UWTV. 


UW Marketing was established in May 2006 to build awareness of and enhance the reputation of the University of Washington through strategic marketing and communications initiatives.  Through its three core areas —  Creative Services, Strategic Communications and Events — UW Marketing supports University Advancement and External Affairs by producing effective publications, Web site development, advertising, events, donor recognition and other strategic initiatives. 

We have an outstanding opportunity for a Web Developer on the Marketing Web Team to impact and impart the University of Washington’s image, mission, goals and resources through technology and multimedia. The Web Developer will identify and develop new features, sites, programs, tools and designs that embrace Web 2.0, best standards and practices, and accessibility throughout the university’s Web presence. 

This position will develop, implement and support Web applications for top-level pages, projects, portals and initiatives on both existing and future UW Intranets and public-facing Web sites. The Web Developer also will operate at a high technical level, perform complex tasks and will consult with senior developers and software engineers in UW Technology on issues pertaining to the main UW servers, and with senior developers in UW Advancement on issues pertaining to the Advancement servers. 


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 
•     Identify and advise on the best Web solutions to modernize and enhance the university’s Web presence, internally and externally. 
•     In collaboration with the web team, develop, manage and support the Plone Content Management System to centrally manage, update and post Web content and processes. 
•     Develop and/or adapt open source, third-party and internal applications, software and programs for the Plone Content Management System. 
•     Develop and support new functionality for Web sites. 
•     Research, implement and maintain technologies to support and evolve organizational Web publishing processes. 
•     Interface with and provide answers and technical recommendations to consultants, users and managers. 
•     Maintain open communication on development issues and progress with customers, colleagues, providers and management. 
•     Provide CMS and technical support for colleagues and clients as warranted. 
•     Other duties, as assigned.
Requirements:
•     Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience AND five to seven years of progressively more responsible job-related experience developing Web sites. 
•     Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills, including communicating effectively with stakeholders about priorities and deliverables. 
•     Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy. 
•     Ability to manage multiple projects at once and work under tight deadlines. 
•     Commitment to provide the highest level of customer service to external and internal clients, partners and customers. 
•     Ability to work successfully in a team environment as well as independently. 
•     Must be able to work evenings and weekends, as necessary.  The Web Developer is considered essential UW personnel in the case of suspended operations. 

The following technical skills are required: 
•     Plone (Advanced level skills). 
•     HTTP/HTTPS protocols, python (Advanced level skills). 
•     Security (Proficient and current in security issues and skills). 
•     Understand and use the concepts of unit, functional and integration testing. 
•     Experience and proficiency using Object Oriented Programming, version control systems (subversion, git). 
•     Zope/Plone development experience with an emphasis on Zope 3 style programming used in a production, enterprise-level setting. 
•     Experience with Varnish, Squid, CacheFu and general caching and performance strategies. 
•     Experience and proficiency using Linux servers, Apache software, Proxy servers. 
•     Understand modern Zope and Plone programming techniques using adapters, ZCML and Generic Setup. 

      

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:
•     Experience with XDV and mod transform. 
•     Experience with PHP, Perl, XML, and other scripting/languages. 
•     Experience with TCP/IP, Server Administration, and other scripting/languages/protocols. 
•     Working knowledge of XML/XSL/XPath syntax and use on Web sites. 
•     Contributed to an open source project. 
•     Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. 
•     Current or former membership on the Plone Framework Team. 
•     Familiarity with higher education institutions and/or marketing and/or working in a complex organizational environment.
