Piwik is a open-source analytics package similar to Google Analytics
(sort of), there are various Plone integrations for it. I've not used
it personally, but it might be a good starting point. And of course
there are always traditional log analysis tools.

I've used the "traditional log analysis approach" (with Webalizer), getting the reports from Apache.

Once configured, it works ok. It's easy to configure, however not very flexible with the log format (you have to let your logs in a standard format).

No big complaints though, except maybe that the URL based reports don't aggregate results for site areas. I mean, suppose my site is organized in two main areas, say, /Plone/areaA and /Plone/areaB, Webalizer doesn't have any metrics that sum up the hits for /Plone/areaA/page1, /Plone/areaA/page2, /Plone/areaA/page3, etc., as a result for /Plone/areaA. That makes it difficult to have a complete idea of area popularity, instead of page popularity. But I think you can't get this metrics even from Piwik (not sure about that).

You can however take the reports in pure text format and manipulate them in Excel (and extract more metrics from the data).

If you want a real thorough analysis of your usage i would recommend a
combination of a 'log analysis' ( I prefer AWSTATS here over webalyzer,
just a personal preference) together with piwik (JS based like google
analytics)

Those two approaches complement each other nicely, but depending on
your use case it might be overkill.

iirc there are some howtos in the documentation on plone.org to set up
awstats, but anyway the setup is straightforward

If you save the living environment, the biodiversity that we have left,
you will also automatically save the physical environment, too. But If
you only save the physical environment, you will ultimately lose both.

1) Don’t drive species to extinction

2) Don’t destroy a habitat that species rely on.

3) Don’t change the climate in ways that will result in the above.

Forgoing any security issue with a intranet client running javascript
code against an internal page, you can use Google Analytics on
internal pages as long as those clients have access to the internet.

Piwik is the next best thing, if you don't wish to pay for something
like Urchin which has .js hit processing and raw log processing.
Piwik as well has a utility to ingest/pull Google Analytics data into
Piwik database as well as a utility to ingest raw logs.
