I couldn't figure out how to get around joining the group a second
time. When I followed the invitation link in the email, I got to a
page saying I was already subscribed, but when I tried to post it said
I was not a member until I joined. I joined the group, but seem to be
in twice.

if anyone knows how to get around this problem, let me know and I will
try to delete one membership.

Nan. I also followed the invitation link and subscribed. I couldn't
post until my group membership was activated. To do this, I had to
"create an account", but that really just meant entering my regular
email address (not a gmail address) and a password. Then I had to
wait for a verification email to be sent to my email address, and I
had to click on the link there, before my membership was all
complete. Now I can post. Maybe you tried again under another email
address before you finished the member activation process?

With Marci's help I successfully solved the membership problem.

The problem was caused by my personal gmail account. Google groups
was signing me in under my gmail account, rather than under the
account associated with my UCAR email address.

To fix the problem, I unsubscribed the duplicate membership, then
signed out of my session, and signed back in using my NCAR user
address (this part was a little strange, because I didn't realize that
I had a membership under my NCAR address - but apparently I created
one sometime in the past). And I am also not sure why google assumed
that my default membership would be my gmail acct rather than my ucar
acct.
