Apologies for the second message today.

I am using linux OS 64x through putty. I have been trying to install plink1.9 without success. I download the zip, unzip it, and move the executable to a directory in my $PATH. However, trying to execute it gives me a "cannot execute binary file: exec format error" error, even though I have downloaded the linux x64 version.

Trying to install it using apt-get doesn't work (only works for plink 1.07 - which has another error in itself; has to be used as "plink1" because otherwise it comes in conflict with a putty-tools package also named plink).

I need at least the 1.9 version in order to work with my VCF files.

1. Can you clarify which zip you downloaded?  What is the output of "ls -al plink" after you've unzipped it?
2. Have you tried apt-get on "plink1.9"?

1. Downloaded the stable 1.9 version for linux x64 (http://s3.amazonaws.com/plink1-assets/plink_linux_x86_64_20201019.zip). The output of ls -al:

-rwxrwxr-x 1 ubuntu ubuntu 41656168 Oct 20 04:50 plink

2. When trying to use apt-get, I get this message:

Package plink1.9 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'plink1.9' has no installation candidate

If you run "./plink" from the directory you copied the unzipped binary to, what do you get?

The same error as before, "-bash: ./plink: cannot execute binary file: Exec format error".

I've never seen that happen on a Linux x86-64 system before.  What is the output of "uname -a"?

Here's the output: Linux ip-[IP]aws #39-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jan 14 02:53:31 UTC 2021 aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux

Ok, that explains it, this is an ARM instead of an x86-64 system.

I don't yet have enough experience with these systems to confidently release precompiled binaries for them, but the plink 1.9 source code was actually updated a few months ago to compile on ARM, so you can try to do that.

Thanks. What exactly should I do then?

If you are not familiar with compiling from source, your best bet is to try to find an x86-64 machine to work on.

Thanks Christopher. I ended up switching to a x86-64 and now it seems to be working fine.

Hi alls,

Would you mind help share the linkage to download plink for ARM?  the previous one is for x86_64 (http://s3.amazonaws.com/plink1-assets/plink_linux_x86_64_20201019.zip).

Thanks!

As noted in this thread, you probably need to compile from source for now.
