No where else have I found a site that focuses on spoken, idiomatic German, the manner in which Germans speak everyday. The attention to detail is great. May I ask, where did you learn to speak English so well?

I learned most of the German I know through immersion, by living there. Just like a child, at least 64% of your questions were answerable just by relaxing and listening to the German in my mind.

Thank you for teasing out the rationale behind much of what became stored as rote or childlike language patterning. I was surprised and happy that so much was there.

No argument that learning a language in context is always the best possible immersion into that language through un-and subconscious absorption, cultural, social as well as purely linguistic.

If you hear something repeated umpteen times a day for any period of time, if of normal intelligence, you will naturally start imitating that word, phrase or utterance without thinking. Producing will therefore come easily and things will proceed more successfully without being hemmed in by purely institutional guides such as a textbook or listening CD, no matter how thorough.

And you have to learn how to speak well enough to be understood, which will be easier or harder depending on your native language. There are other factors too, like how much time and energy you have for learning, and how much you worry about making mistakes or not understanding people.

Das ist aber ein bisschen ein anderes Thema als Prpositionalphrasen. Bei denen ist ja die Prposition und der Fall festgelegt, whrend es bei deinen Beispielen verb-unabhngig ist. Auf jeden Fall natrlich auch super wichtig :).

4/14. Good Quiz. I tend to use the more basic english prepositional meaning and need to practice more. The explanations are very helpful in understanding the logic. Keep up the good work.

Also in the quiz on question 9/10/11 that first introduces wie vs nach in the explaination it first references wie vs ALS instead of nach (but then it goes back to wie vs nach in the remainder of the explanation)

I got 13 right (no hints, so I guess my lists are paying off) and failed on the soup one, because I assumed that the soup could actually taste exactly like fish and BBQ sauce, given the way Maria cooks ;)))

With the pronunciation tool, you can check how well you pronounce a word or sentence.It uses an AI system that is being developed by EF languages for that purpose. The AI takes your input, and compares it to how a native speaker would sound. Then, it gives you feedback for each word and the sentence as a whole.

You put in a word or sentence or load and example from the site. Then you hit record to start and again to stop. You'll then get feedback on how you did, for each individual word and in total. The AI grades sound, emphasis and rhythm.The recording is limited to 20 seconds and will stop automatically.

That's beyond what an automatic system like this can do. It's not a tool to perfect your pronunciation. It's more about giving you a rough estimate and giving you the option to actually speak. But to really iron out mistakes, you need feedback from a native speaker.

Quite a bit depends on the quality of your microphone. If there's a lot of noise around you, the AI will struggle with that. Also, the AI does better with sentences. For short words, it's not as good.Lastly, the AI is still being developed and struggles with some important words.

The recording button should change color and pulsate while recording. If nothing happens, the most likely problem is that your browser is blocking the microphone. You can allow mic access by clicking on the icon left of the address in the address bar (on most browsers).

This next set of exercises will help you properly learn and practice German prepositions. In particular, you will learn and practice prepositions of place and the use of the prepositions "aus", "von", "nach" and "zu". This is important, since German language learners often mix up the prepositions "aus" and "von" and the prepositions "zu" and "nach.". Keep in mind, for example, that if you want to say that you come from (are a native of) a country, you would say, "Ich komme aus Deutschland", whereas if you are coming from one destination to another you would say, for example, "Ich fahre von Bonn nach Koeln."

Although prepositions will not change with case like adjectives or nouns, there are some prepositions which will require the noun to take the accusative case, others the dative case and still others will take either case depending on how they are used. The accusative prepositions are durch, fuer, gegen, ohne, um.The dative prepositions are aus, ausser, bei, gegenueber, mit, nach, seit, von, zu, statt, trotz and waehrend.The two-way prepositions are an, auf, hinter, in, neben, ueber, unten, vor, zwischen.
