If you have lenses that are similar, say two prime lenses or two telephoto zoom lenses, chances are you don't need to purchase multiple sets. However, if you have lenses that are quite different, say a kit lens and a prime lens, then I recommend buying one for each. On your computer: Open up the email with the download link and save the cheat cards in a location that can easily be found. Then double click on the PDF file to open it in Adobe Reader. If you don't already have Adobe Reader, you can download it for free here.

On your iPhone or iPad: Open up the email with the download link. Copy the link, open up the Safari app and copy/paste the url. Once the download page appears, click the download button and wait for the cheat cards to open. Then tap the screen and you should see a "Save to iBooks" button. This will save it to the built-in iBooks app for future reference.

On your Android Device: I recommend first downloading the free Adobe Reader app. Once it's installed, open up the email with the download link. You should have the option to open the file using the Adobe Reader app, which will also save it for future reference. If you have trouble opening the PDF on your Android device, go to your Applications and select the "My Files" app or use any file manager/explorer app. Then, navigate to the downloads folder and tap the cheat cards PDF file to open it.

On your Amazon Fire: I recommend first downloading the free Adobe Reader app. Once it's installed, open up the email with the download link. Download the PDF to your Amazon Fire. You should have the option to open the file using the Adobe Reader app, which will also save it for future reference.

When printed, each Cheat Card is 2" x 3.5" inches (same size as a standard business card). When viewed on a mobile device, the Cheat Card fits to the dimensions of your phone or tablet. For those with poor eyesight, I recommend rotating your device to the horizontal orientation. This will enlarge the text and make it easier to read.

Open up the cheat cards in Adobe Reader, you can download it for free here. Then go to 'File' -> 'Print' and a print, dialog box will pop up. Under the 'Page Sizing & Handling' area, click the 'Multiple' button and select 6 pages per sheet. This will allow you to print multiple cards per sheet at the correct size.

Once printed, each Cheat Card should be 4x3.5 inches (single-sided). Just fold it down the middle, glue or double-stick tape the blank side together and then laminate it. The finished card will be 2x3.5 inches, which is the same size as a business card...great for storing inside a wallet, purse or small camera bag.

Switching from a Canon DSLR a while back, I found my new Sony a6000 difficult to learn. A big reason for this is that the last decade has brought many new features to cameras, but the other problem is that the Sony menu system doesn't guide me to an option I need. As a long-time tech writer, I've made many quick-reference cards and guides, and I needed one for this camera. The one I made gets revised to show the features I currently need to look up, as other settings become second-nature and can be omitted.

One location to use this would be a smartphone, but that may let it get too long -- I want my sheet to fit on one phone screen, or on a card that fits a shirt pocket or, in my case, taped inside the top parts of my gear bag and camera case. Note that these different ways to view it need somewhat different dimensions.

A picture of one a6000 card is below. This is pretty close to the native or default configuration, though it has a few custom settings. It also includes options a new user will need first (and may want to remove later).

If you think this idea would be useful, you would need a way to change the content as your usage changes. I can send anyone the PDF for the card shown. I was also thinking of selling (cheap) my Word document, which contains all the needed symbols correctly sized and adjusted for height on the line. (In writing, I never refer to menu icons by words.) But it appears there's no safe way to send Word documents. If anyone can tell me how to do it, maybe this idea has potential.

In the following example quick-ref, note how the options for the monitor (4th line) and autofocus options (next-to-last line) each have options from very different parts of the menu system. Those illustrate the problem that made me need this reference.

This is nice, but I find it not much useful (at least for me). I agree that learning Sony menu system is painful, so I set my camera to avoid menu as much as possible. Some menu actions are still needed though, so I set remaining used functions to My menu.

I tend to shoot on the warmer side. Honestly, most of the time, I find my images too yellow, and in this example I would choose 4760K or 4550K as the most accurate. Also, notice how the images looks underexposed in the last photo with the temperature set at 3450K.

You can also use Kelvin to accentuate colors in a sunset. For example, if you changed the color temperature to 2500K, the beautiful yellows and golds will be neutralized and the image will be lacking. If you change the settings to 6500K the sunset will look warmer than neutral. Play with it and see what a difference it can make!

Here, the sun was beginning to set, so a beautiful warm light was illuminating my little girl. I liked the warmness of the light, so I set my white balance around 5260K because I did not want to neutralize it. In ACR the settings read a little differently, which said I had it set at 4800K.

Love this post. Good reminders for what I used to do. Mine is only accessed through a menu so it is a bit slower, but it is faster than color correcting in lightroom. Love your example photos as well. Best part of being photographers is the pictures of our children!

I also use Kelvin color light values from time to time. However, I am very fortunate that my Digital Camera offers a WB feature that allows me to take a reading of the subject that in turn provides the Kelvin Value plus a registered sample picture of that specific Kelvin Value with or without flash.

In other words, the first Camera reading and sample shot is realtime; you either choose that actual Kelvin value and sample shot or adjust your Kelvin Temp up or down. Without this feature you estimate the initial Kelvin value, check your sample shot and next adjust. The Camera I use is the Sony a6000 which is outstanding in all respects; I am extremely happy with this outstanding camera and the outstanding results.
