Issue with router crashing / rebooting when I have multiple wifi connections propagate, and occasionally when I plug in a standard ethernet line. Currently running dd-wrt version 36527 and have tried upgrading / downgrading dd-wrt and the problem persists. I've been attempting to put the router into recovery mode to see if the standard firmware will solve the problem, but I cannot for the life of me get it to take the old firmware via tftp. I've tried just powering on and attempting to push the firmware while I have the amber power led and tried using the reset button as well. I've followed several various tutorials regarding this process and I just can't get it to work.

Now before anyone goes to far, being transparent, I used this router for probably close to two years as a secondary AP on my network running 8 cameras and around 30 wifi devices. While I was doing this I had the router in my attic....in West Texas, soooo I'm at the point of believing the hardware is simply wasted due to the abuse I put it through by leaving it in aforementioned attic. Never the less looking for opinions / options as the router functions fine no issues at all, until multiple wifi connections. I would believe if the hardware was failing it simply wouldn't work at all, but I've not had issues with failing router hardware to understand what types of issues it might present while doing this.

You'd want to check on the dd-wrt forum's on how best to get back to the stock firmware if that's what you're attempting. Otherwise from the sounds of it you're running ddwrt and they'd be the experts on their firmware/issues.

Thanks, appreciate the response. I have consulted with the instructions they list, and they are basically the same as what I found on this forum. In fact some of their links point to this forum directly. Specifically when I hold down the reset when booting the router, it never seems to go into recovery mode, which I believe it should do regardless of what firmware is running on it. I'm going to try this as well with the WPS button to see if that causes any change, but not hopeful it will.

Really what I'm getting at here more than looking for instructions to resolve is more has anyone ran into issues with this model with regards to the radios causing this sort of behaviour due to being located in a less than desireable environment. I have no doubt that didn't help, but I did monitor the temps on a regular basis, kept a fan pointed at the unit at all times, but still this seems to be the likely culprit. I had a dd-wrt build on this router for several years and it ran perfect and only in the last few weeks did these symptoms develop, so it almost has to be a hardware issue. But I'm an optimist when it comes to hardware and I have a hard time chucking something to the garbage if there's even a small chance it's still good. So this is more my own psychological issue more than anything likely.

I just purchased my first wireless AC router, and it's a Netgear R6400. I'm interested in the additional customizability afforded by DD-WRT. However, I have a few specific questions about changing firmware. Specifically, my router is currently running the stock version (V1.0.1.6_1.0.4) that was installed when I opened the box. I now have the option to update to the new Netgear firmware V1.0.1.12 ( _id/30765?cid=wmt_netgear_organic) or the newest Kong R6400 firmware ( -wrt-netgear-r6400-kong-mod-updat...). Both of these files are CHK files.

Since this would be the first time I've ever put non-stock firmware on my router, I'm wondering if using the Kong Mod will void my warranty, or whether I risk messing up my router. Also, if I want to go back to the stock firmware (either V1.0.1.6 or V1.0.1.12), how would I go about doing that? Thanks. My primary reason for testing out DD-WRT is to use the DFS channels since somehow the other 5 GHz channels around me are kind of clogged. Any advice there would be helpful too. Thanks!

Hello, I am really impressed with the custom firmware released by KONG for the R6400. However, wireless performance seems to be an issue. I was only able to achieve half the speeds I was getting on stock. Just reporting my findings, Im willing to test/develop if needed, would really like to get this version running flawlessly.

After DD-WRT added support for the R6400, I poked Shibby and asked if he'd be able to port it based off of all that data and it turns out he was able to! He sent me a test build a few weeks back and I had no major issues with it.

I have loaded the latest DD-WRT Kong Mod 30020M onto my Netgear R6400 and unable to connect to the Internet. If I connect the WAN to my old Netgear WNR2000 router and connect one of its LAN ports to the WAN of my R6400 it works!

I've installed on my Netgear R6400 the firmware "DD-WRT Kong Mod for NETGEAR R6400 2016-11-10" because there are some features that the stock firmware don't have.
From now I'll speak about wired connections only. I don't speak about wireless performance.
I have gigabit internet provider with 1 Gbps down / 200 Mbps up and I experienced with this DD-WRT firmware a slow WAN to LAN speed: maximum 310 Mbps speedtest download. I tried also to disable the firewall without improvements.
With Netgear stock firmware (v 1.0.1.12) I can get download values between 900 and 910 Mbps: this result for me is acceptable. (Connecting the PC directly to the gateway of the internet provider, bypassing the R6400 router, I can get speedtest download values between 938 and 942 Mbps).

BUT! when I set up the router as a VPN router using OpenVPN protocol, the router will lock up after only a few minutes. The only way to get it back up is to power cycle it and then wait for it to lock again.

Note: I have also tried different versions of DD-WRT but they will not connect to the VPN provider. Their tech support has spent hours trying to help me get it to work but it won't connect. On a positive note, the router never locks up when using DD-WRT.

While it did seem to flash correctly. Apparently this is for TomatoUSB not just regular Tomato? When I log into the router it has two dropdowns on the display marked "System" and "LAN" but it shows nothing under them. I see not controls or ways to configure anything which is now making it impossible to revert or get out of the router. The wireless and ethernet is working as expected but I can't see any controls to change their names, security, etc.

While I was digging around I noticed in my browser console that the page was trying to use Jquery functions but Jquery isn't linked or available to the page. I'm wondering if this is why I'm seeing nothing displaying for my controls.

Anyone having issue port forwarding with kong lastest firmware? i cant seem to get the port fowarding going here...everytime when i do it basically wont allow me to connect to the internet until i disable the fowarded port.

woke up this morning, to find all my wireless devices were offline, but still connected to my 6400. Obviously a reboot solved it, but why did this happen? Do i have a wrong value in my DDWRT config? I've got it set as the default 3600 lease time. Another thing that bothers me is since upgrading to DDWRT kong mod, my WPS button on the router no longer works! Any help is much appreciated.

So far, it's working fine and everything seems stable - including 5GHz and overall Wifi. I didn't need to make any changes to the firmware to get it to work. This is likely because from looking at both R6400v2 and R7000 specs, the 6400v2 seems like a refreshed R7000 with adjacent chips in their respective families - Think iPhone 5C vs. the iPhone 5.

Also, considering this worked out better than expected (so far), it may be possible to switch to the AdvancedTomato build for R7000 using DD-WRT as well. If someone tries this (again only at their own risk), please post about how this works out for you.

Does anyone know what is required to flash stock firmware onto the r6400v2 after flashing tathataga das's dd-wrt firmware? I've tried several times uploading it to the dd wrt interface, and several times with tftp.

just picked up a brand new R6400v2 today and Kong's DDWRT for R6400 will not flash. He claims it works on both models ? Netgear firmware says the chk file can't be flashed, it is incorrect for this router. And I downloaded the latest version from the desipro website. Any pointers ?

Like some other have already noted in posts, the R6400v2 rejects Kong's R6400 build. This is probably due to the R6400 using parts of the 7000P router (at least that's my guess). The 6400v1 has a 800 Mhz dual-core, but the 6400v2 to has a 1Ghz dual-core processor according to Wikidev. The 7000P shares the same processor and memory (but a different wireless chipset). After flashing the R6400v2 with DDWRT it lists it as a 7000P (also confirmed in other posts before).

IMPORTANT: The general rules of DDWRT still apply. You do this at your own risk. Tutorials can be found all over the internet. I don't do 30/30/30 resets on my Netgear routers and a lot of people suggest it isn't necessary. But you need to use your own judgement.

Also... NEVER (!!!) attempt to flash DDWRT through a wireless connection. Always use an ethernet cable and disable wireless on your computer altogether. Download all firmware you attempt to use to your computer before starting any of this.

10) Like many other posts suggest, you should head to the Setup --> Basic setup tab and enable "shortcut Forwarding Engine". This is supposed to prevent the capping of transfer rates that others have reported.

I'm pretty sure the reason why the R6400.chk file (Kong mod) will not install is because the v1 and v2 have different board ID's. For the v1 it reads U12H332T00_NETGEARHDR0 and for the v2 it reads U12H332T20_NETGEARHDR0 so that is probably the reason why the firmware is rejected on the v2. The Kong mod has the v1 board ID implemented so it won't work on the v2, only on the v1. Technically the mod will run on both routers though.
