Hello everyone,
I just want to introduce myself, since I am the nominal administrator
of this list. I recently attended PyCon AU, in which Mark Pesce gave a
fantastic keynote about an idea he had for some software which would
allow us to reclaim a degree of privacy in an era of mass social
networking, while still enjoying the benefits of being highly
connected (my words, not his). I think this is an important idea, and
it is up to someone to show that it is possible to reclaim a degree of
privacy, ownership of data and ideas and above all control of your
identity in a digital environment.
My own background is in software development of "traditional apps",
although perhaps a little nontraditional in that Python is the chief
language for this. I currently work in natural language generation,
but have broad interests.
I feel almost silly "administering" the list as I cannot shake the
feeling that there is some pretense of authority in role. There is
not! That said, having participated in a number of mailing lists over
the years, I am reminded of the importance of having a few basic
principles written down for when things get contentious... I'll
follow up with a list of forum rules shortly, but I want to keep the
focus on this message on-mission, which I see as
"Building a game-changing tool which brings privacy, anonymity and
heterogeneity back to the social graph"
Thanks,
-Tennessee
