These transitions were originally created in Hitfilm, The Transition_1 was created with fractal noise and it was made by me. The Transition_3 (Which is the second and last transition) was created in Hitfilm by another YouTuber known as motionepicFX, but it was only available as a project file for hitfilm, So, I just export it and made a video on how to use the Transition_3 in shotcut.

I'm trying to use an animated 4k matte as a transition for my project. It has worked for me in the past to set a stylized transition between video clips, but now I need to cut to an image file (because its a branded title card) and for the life of me I can't understand why it doesn't work! Here's my process and problem:

But when I do this, the result is that my entire image file goes alpha. I can see the clip I'm trying to transition away from in full, and when that clip ends, blackness. For context, I did do this effect for the opening card (which is video) as well, previously in this project. It is also located on V2.

The 55 Matte Transitions Pack contains 55 dynamic transitions ready for your next video project. These pre-rendered 4K clips have a duration of 1.5 seconds. To use, drag and drop them over your edits and use the luma matte or luma inverted matte modes.

Our animation is now complete. Press the space bar to preview the animation. The white arrow shape should move across the screen from left to right. When used as a luma matte the white area will create a transparency effect.

It is important to add an extra half to one second to the end of the animation. This will allow for dropped frames and working with different frame rates. Without the extra second, the luma matte, when applied, will appear to freeze at the end.

To use the animation as a luma matte we first need to export it as a video file, we recommend exporting as an mp4 file due to it's much higher compression. You can export as an mp4 file using Adobe Media Encoder but in this example we will use After Effects built in render queue and convert the file afterwards using FFmpeg.

The JSON below, applies the luma matte to the end of our first video clip. The first video clip overlaps our second video clip by one second. When the luma matte plays, it creates a transparency effect.

In this guide we showed you how to animate a simple shape. After Effects is a sophisticated motion graphics editor that can create advanced animations. By combining black, white and grey elements in to your animations, you can create more elaborate transitions.

Regarding transition image #1, I have made these types of transitions from custom mattes many times. You have the timeline layering correct as shown in your attachment to the first post. But you definitely need the V1 and V2 outgoing and incoming shots overlapping under the matte key clip on V3, as you had it in the first post. There is no need to step in and nest anything to achieve this type of transition. You may need to use the "swap source" option to get the outgoing and incoming order correctly. What I don't understand is why it's not working for you. Is there a point in the transition matte stencil where it goes completely full screen?

1. Place your incoming video on track 1.
2. Place the transition clip on track 2 directly above the video, making sure they end at the same point.
3. Place your outgoing video on track 3, making sure they begin at the same point.
4. Change the composite mode (sometimes called blend mode) of the track 3 video to "travel matte - alpha" or whichever similar option is given.
That should do it!

First, the matte key clip is intended to be used with an cookie cutter stencil matte that is white on black, no embedded alpha channel. When you have a composition with an embedded alpha channel, you go to the options section of the import tool and for alpha you usually choose "invert". The result is a matte key clip that you apply on a single layer. Does what you're downloading have an alpha channel associated with it? And again, confirming that for the Avid methodology, you have your track layering correct when using a matte key effect...V1 and V2 have outgoing and incoming and V3 has the stencil cookie cutter with the matte key effect applied to it.

Now, something is really bizarre about that. If the comp has an alpha and you choose "ignore" in the import tool alpha options, you should wind up with a standard master clip that is a white on black stencil cookie cutter. Do you? You put that on V3, apply a "matte key" effect with the outgoing and incoming overlaps on V1 and V2 underneath that V3 clip and all is Kosher. I do this on a regular basis, I know it works. Try creating a new user profile and see what happens there.

You were right, with the ignore option it is working. When I originally tried ignore I was using the attached Picture of a transition which looked gray to me, however it was just the gray floor of the incoming picture which fooled me.

I was also trying to use the alpha but could not get it to work, ignore is the best way to import these. Thanks for staying with me on this.

You're welcome Ronald, glad you got it sorted out. The cookie cutter that you apply the matte key effect to - the black areas will disappear and be replaced by the background image - the white areas will superimpose the foreground image. The swap sources parameter let's you decide which clip is which.

So the final question is why does "pre-made track matte video transitions" from Video Blocks even have an alpha channel since Avid does not need them for black and white transitions? I guess their needed for Final Cut and Premiere Pro as in this tutorial by Video Blocks;

Probably. However, if the transition contains one frame approx. midway through that is a full frame image (think NFL on CBS graphic transition), that could be imported with an alpha as a matte key clip on V2, hiding a cut between outgoing and incoming on V1 directly under that one frame.

Traditionally, you would use an animation to cover up the transition between 2 scenes. Matte transitions use the black and white values of a video to display both scenes at the same time while transitioning. Which in turn allows for a unique way to transition between scenes.

I absolutely love that right transition shade. A warm brown transition shade like that is so nice, and I find myself using warm shades like that more and more. Everything honestly swatched really nicely in this palette. You get the 8 shimmer/satin shades like before, with those 2 new matte transition shades.

And *drum roll* it does have the same formula as the old Comfort Zone. Do I find it mountains above and improved? No, I find the shimmers performing the same way as before. So you can breathe. You could even say the palette was improved with those two matte shades.

Great Pack to use in your transitions and matte effects. FULL HQ animated Luma Mattes or Track matte. for only 10$!. This growing pack will increase indefinitely. The sooner you get it, the cheaper you get the whole package.

When using a track matte, you are transferring the transparency information of one layer and assigning it to another. Because of this, it requires at least two layers to achieve. As an example, take a look at the still images below.

Take a look at the new Prism transition pack from Rocketstock. This pack includes 200 different transitions in 9 different categories, including 30 circle transitions. All of these transition clips are simple animated shapes with alpha channels that animate in and move to cover the entire screen at some point. Covering the entire screen allows for a perfect transition between two clips.

While that may seem a bit simple and basic, even a transition as simple as this is still used in Hollywood movies! Great examples of these that most people can relate to are the wipe transitions from movies like Star Wars (even the new ones!).

Alphamatte transitions are made up of opaque (or a solid color) and transparent(clear) area of the clip. The idea is similar to luma matte, but in this caseone clip is masked to the solid area and the other is masked to the transparentarea.

In Adobe Premiere Pro we will need to place our two video clips (that we want to transition) on two separate video tracks. (Such as V1 and V2.) Then we need to place our luma matte transition above them, on another video track. Think of this as a timeline sandwich: your second clip between the first clip and the luma matte transition clip. Make sure you reference the image below if you are not sure! Both clips need to overlap the same length of the luma matte transition.

Now apply the video effect Track Matte Key to your second clip. You will now see the Track Matte Key effect options under the effect controls for that clip. Set the Matte option to Video Track 3 (or whichever track has your luma matte clip on it), and set the Composite Using option to Matte Luma.
