1.) what is the name of the line with which a compass aligns?
ANSWER: A needle.

2.) which pole(north or south) of a compass magnet is attracted to Earth's magnetic north pole?
ANSWER: The pole that is attracted to the magnet is north pole is the north pole on the compass.

3.) Is the magnet in a compass a permanent magnet or an electromagnet?
ANSWER: There is no source of current in a compass, therefore the magnet is a permanent magnet.

4.) The magnetic north pole and the geographic North Pole are not in the same location.
A.) Are the magnetic north pole and the geographic North Pole always the same distance apart?
ANSWER: NO
B.) Why is true or not true?
ANSWER: Magnetic north shifts over time, it has to do with the rotation of the liquid iron inside the Earth.

5.) The angle of difference between the geographic and magnetic poles is called the declination. How does the declination change as you move north from where you live?
ANSWER: Because you are moving north.

6.) It is important to take the declination into account when you are closer to the poles.
A.) What happens to the angle of declination as you get closer to the poles?
ANSWER: When your close to the magnetic north pole, declination will be so variable and unpredictable that a magnetic compass becomes all but useless.

7.) What characteristic of iron would make it a bad material for the housing around a compass?
ANSWER: It is magnetic and would throw off your little dial.

8.) Recall that this is what a compass would look like if you were orienting yourself to the north west? If you wanted to go southeast, how would the compass be positioned?
ANSWER: The compass would be positioned between south and east.
