Practice Assignment
Earth Science (S1392846)

Dakota Hurlocker
Points possible: 50

Date: 1/16/13

Answer the following questions thoroughly.
1. James Hutton is considered the "father of geology":
A. What theory did James Hutton develop? (2 points)
The rock cycle.
B. What is the main concept behind this theory? (3 points)
It describes the transitions of rocks throughout time.

2. Igneous rocks are often found along volcanoes and plate boundaries.
A. What material do igneous rocks form from? (3 points)
Magma or lava.
B. What is the difference between the formation of intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks? (2 points)
Extrusive rocks are formed by the cooling of magma or above the surface. Intrusive rocks are cooled below the surface.
3. What processes occur that change a sedimentary rock into an igneous rock? (4 points)

Sedimentary rock can be turned into lave or magma by contact with either of the substances or exposure to extreme heat. When the lava or magma cools, it becomes igneous rock.

4. What are three ways sedimentary rocks can form? (6 points)

1. by transport.
2. in place by living organisms.
3. by chemical deposition.

5. What three factors can change a sedimentary rock into a metamorphic rock? (6 points)

Heat, pressure, and chemically active fluids.

6. Describe three actions caused by the force of water that help drive the rock cycle. (6 points)
Erode rock into smaller rock fragments, dissolve rock into minerals, both of which can be re deposited as sedimentary rock, and carried to the ocean to be melted at subducting plates.

7. What processes found at a convergent boundary will help form the following rocks? (6 points)
A. Metamorphic rocks: erupting magma
B. Igneous rocks: oceanic crust collisions
C. Sedimentary rocks: convergent boundaries

8. What processes found at a divergent boundary will help form the following rocks? (6 points)
A. Metamorphic rocks convergent
B. Igneous rocks: metamorphic
C. Sedimentary rocks: divergent

9. What event found at a transform boundary will help form metamorphic rocks? (2 points)
Undergoing extreme pressure or temperature change.
