The below endorsement of FUN no way implies that I had anything to do with
the real work of charts, organizing, setting up, tearing down...I just had
FUN....
The TOUR DE FRANK update…
Well…I thought I'd take a moment and tell
everybody what they missed.
First up…The Annual Mark Gahr FrankFest. That
party was held on Saturday
June 7 at Dave and Shari Gillette’s house…a nice
peaceful setting that
was completely shattered by the dozens of very talented
(and in my case,
not so talented) musicians that came to play. All the usual
tunes from
years past were played (Blessed Relief, and so on) along with some
new
tunes. It was VERY EVIDENT that indeed some practices occurred…or
as
Mark said of “Tell Me You Love Me”…”It was only 99% of the
train wreck
it was last year.” Progress my friends, progress. In my
opinion…it was
great. A GOB O’ people worked very hard to get the
stages set and the
sound system set up….what a bunch! It was a VERY fun
day with lots and lots
of GREAT MUSIC…if you were not there…TOO BAD FOR
YOU! The weather could not
have cooperated more…
On to Zappa Plays Zappa - Monday night at the
Pageant. If you were at
the first ZPZ in STL…you know that show was a
absolutely magnificent
display of musicianship and the closest thing you
could ever come to a
real Frank show….Well…I have good news and bad news.
First the Good
News. For those of you who are fans of the Roxy album, as am I
(I think
it is one of Frank’s finest) Dweezil told the audience last night
that
it is scheduled for release on High Def …that’s right you heard
right.... audio AND VIDEO
of what many consider to be a GREAT FZ
album….I'll be first in line
for that one!!!
Now the bad news…if you went
to this show expecting to see the same
thing you saw at the last show…nope.
No Steve Vai, No Terry Bozio, No
Napoleon Murphy Brock. And I knew all that
going in…Ray White was the
special guest…and he still has GREAT pipes…but one
Ray White does not
replace Vai, Bozio, and Brock.
Most of the music was
from the Joe’s Garage era…highlighting, of
course, Ray White’s vocals.
Not my favorite FZ stuff…HOWEVER…one of my
very favorite tunes…Charleena…was
done in all its magnificent splendor.
And Lou...Whoo... Ceeeel was PERFECT .
There was none of the STATISTICALLY
DENSE material… Black Page was there…but
that was about it.
A few really good tunes from Apostrophe’…but that didn't
make up for
the sing along during Joe’s Garage and Don't Eat the Yellow
Snow…
Now, don't get me wrong…It was VERY good, but….Dweezil has
the
chops…no doubt…but the band seemed at little loose…maybe they
were
having a bad night…again…their bad night is a great night for most. So
I
ain’t complaining…I thoroughly enjoyed…and like I said…if you
weren't
there..TOO BAD FOR YOU!
So there you have it….
Bro R.
To all who attended, particpated, helped, ate,
drank, etc...
It was a great time, the music was wonderful, it
will be tough to top next time.
Kevin says he wants to do this music a little
more regularly, I agree that we should. Let's talk.
