----- Forwarded message -----From: "Sheila Moran" <sire...@enableireland.ie>To:Cc: "fiona...@yahoo.com" <fiona...@yahoo.com>Sent: Wed, 19 Aug 2020 at 15:47Subject: ROR appointment with SheilaHi Fiona,I hope you're having a nice week. I thought it would be helpful to summarise the communication strategies that you have been using. I know we didn't get to chat much at the end of the last appointment.-Following his lead: Watching what he is enjoying and using those opportunities to get down to his level and play with him e.g. songs, balloons. This promotes shared engagement, turn taking and back and forth interaction using verbal and non-verbal communication e.g. eye contact while blowing the balloon, pointing to where it might be.-Responding to his communication: Following up his comment/question with another turn and waiting.-Unclear speech: When he speaks in a long sentence with only 1-2 clear words, repeat back those words and model what you think he was trying to say. It's okay if you're not sure, you can guess this and say 'Make the teddy jump?' and wait for him to communicate with his face or vocalise if you are correct. If you're not sure, say 'Show me'. If this still does not clarify his message, it is okay to say 'I'm not sure. How about we....' and move on.-Telling news: Using visuals and verbal prompts to support him in giving information about his day e.g. change of clothes in creche, visit to Bunratty Castle-Language models: Modelling action words, prepositions and short sentences throughout the day as you are commenting on what you are doing.Plan:-Continue using the above strategies-Fiona to link with creche to clarify 'sharing experiences'. I wonder is this sharing in things like outside play and music.-Fiona to link with creche to ask if he shares information when in preschool e.g. does he communicate verbally/non-verbally about something that has happened. For example, when his top got wet, did he show another staff member, tell another staff member or wait for them to initiate changing it?
