Hi Iwona,
I am emailing about R.O’R, a young boy who attends Early Intervention Services and Play Together. I tried calling you on Monday but I didn’t get through and I know you must be so busy especially at this time of year. I wanted to share the same recommendations that I have given to his mother so his communication can be supported in as many environments as possible. I was wondering if you could share this email with the staff working with R and my mobile number is below if anyone would like to give me a call to discuss. Some of these strategies and activities may already be happening.
Communication Strategies used at home:
· Following his lead: Watching what he is enjoying and using those opportunities to get down to his level and play with him e.g. songs, balloons. This promotes shared engagement, turn taking and back and forth interaction using verbal and non-verbal communication e.g. eye contact while blowing the balloon, pointing to where it might be.
· Responding to his communication: Following up his comment/question with another turn and waiting.
· Balance questions and comments: See handouts for further information. R is comprehending WH questions at an age appropriate level e.g. What, Who, Where.
· Unclear speech: When he speaks in a long sentence with only 1-2 clear words, repeat back those words and model what you think he was trying to say. It's okay if you're not sure, you can guess this and say 'Make the teddy jump?' and wait for him to communicate with his face or vocalise if you are correct. If you're not sure, say 'Show me'. If this still does not clarify his message, it is okay to say 'I'm not sure. How about we....' and move on.
· Telling news: Using visuals and verbal prompts to support him in giving information about his day e.g. visit to Bunratty Castle. R’s mother was drawing pictures of something that happened, asking questions and commenting on what happened to support him to talk a time he went to Bunratty Castle and to tell his father about it with her support.
· Language models: Modelling action words, prepositions and short sentences throughout the day as you are commenting on what you are doing.
Play Activities
· Role play of fairy tales: This is something he really enjoys at the moment e.g. Goldilocks and the 3 bears, Jack and the Beanstalk. It would be fantastic if there was capacity to do this in Play Together at whole class circle time/story time or in small pretend play group with a staff member facilitating. At home, he really enjoys it so I think this could be a great opportunity to share in an activity with some peers.
· Short turn taking game: R took turns well with me via video call for Pop up Pirate. If you have that at Play Together or something similar where there is a clear end to the game with a high point (e.g. the pirate popping up) and some adult support for whose turn is next, it would be a lovely play activity.
· Simon Says: R takes turns in Simon Says for up to 2 step directions e.g. ‘Touch your tummy and then touch your nose’. This could also be a whole class activity/small group or paired.
Kind Regards,
Sheila
