After 6 years working with eclipse i'm thinking that it maybe could not be the best option to scala... i feel eclipse too weight and low reponsive... with all of this i think that the best thing is the validation bugs that is driving me crazy! i was thinking in start using other IDE or a simple text editor, but i really like the eclipse shortcuts and i think i can't live without the ctrl+alt+up/down or alt+up/down hotkey... and you?

Cordialmente, Regards,
Tiago Mesquita A. Cunha.

I like Eclipse, but I love IntelliJ IDEA, go for the demo and check it out, it has very good support for play framework, at least in 1.x version

+1 for IntelliJ. I've been using the community edition and it works great.

I use Eclipse. I haven't been overly impressed with it's support for Scala/Play2, but it works. Anyone have any comments about play 2.0/scala with IntelliJ vs Eclipse?

+1 for Intellij since i've tested it, even if eclipse will be forever in my heart :D

I use Eclipse.  The Play support for Eclipse is not that great yet, but Peter said a week ago that he would be fixing it within a few days.

I use SublimeText2 as long as I can because the editor is lightning fast. But when I need to debug and to use APIs I don't know and for which autocompletion is useful, I use Eclipse to help because Scala integration seemed better 2 months ago in Eclipse but I should retry IntelliJ also since I like it too.

I've tried both eclipse and intellij.

Unfortunately, intellij fails to check syntax errors as of now. It does not recognize '->' implicit operation for Map items.

So I am with Eclipse now.

I use Sublime Text 2 for almost everything, unless I'm working on
Jenkins/Jenkins plugins because eclipse is pretty nice if you dont
know a code base well.

Same here, SublimeText (one window for my project, one for the Play source code) + Scala Docs in the browser is usually enough.

Netbeans.

This is the only one on MAC where Visual paradigm works (UML tool), which I use the generate parts of my code (Controllers, models).

I first create projects , than eclipsify, then import eclipse project in Netbeans. For now (i am still in design phase) this has done the trick for me ...

For same reasons weight and slow response of Eclipse currently i'm using netBeans IDE, no problems so far, smooth coding&developing. I have installed IntelliJ for try out, but just i get lots of runtime errors on my 64bit system so i think its not for me.

Working on JetBrain's products is effective for me I was trying Eclipse and Netbeans to save the money, but finally I bought Idea as it's worth of the price. You can try both - free comunity edition and 30-day full trial of commercial version to get your own point of view.

I don't use IDE (so don't read beyond this point if you really need one :-), since I find vim way more powerful for editing, and using scala REPL via play/sbt console gives much better tool for both getting the scope right and tinkering with the code in "real environment" since what you see there is absolutely the same what play will see when running.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned emacs + ensime. There is also a Sublime Text 2 ensime bundle, but it doesn't support all of ensime the way emacs does. Ensime is a memory hog (800 MB for small play! project), but since it launches a sub-process server and communicates with the text editor asynchronously, it doesn't block your editing the way Eclipse can. I find it more productive at the moment that Eclipse with Scala IDE v 2.0.

I haven't checked out the latest Eclipse Scala IDE 2.1 master candidate, which looks pretty good. I can see moving back to Eclipse once refactoring support becomes more robust.

I too use emacs + ensime. It's an awesome combination. As far as the "why" -- I use emacs for all my day-to-day editing, I have not seen the need to break away from that just for Scala ;).

Mark,
What & where are the dependencies I need to specify to have ensime pick up my play project correctly. I went through the framework & repository sub directories but the task seems a bit daunting. What did you use to get ensime & play to work together?

Eclipse and I try and run the non-J2EE version because I don't use most of the 2EE.   If you find Eclipse is running like a dog (a slow dog at that), try deleting your workspace and then re-importing the projects.

Eclipse plugins of note:  http://www.aptana.com/ (monster plugin) and http://www.spket.com/ (fantastic javascript editor).  I also keep a few Eclipse installs, each of which are tailored to doing a particular kind of work.

You need to configure SBT via http://aemon.com/file_dump/ensime_manual.html#tth_sEc3.1.1

Then, at the play conosle, type: "ensime generate"

Works like "eclipsify"

I kind of using a mix between sublime and IntelliJ

Usually I use sublime, and when I need to have a look at Play's code,
or need some autocomplete help, I turn to IntelliJ

Every once in a while I give another try to eclipse plugin, but so far
now IntelliJ support seems to work better

good news is that guillaume started to work on sublime support for
play 2 (http://www.scoop.it/t/playframework/p/1727120066/guillaume-
bort-started-a-sublimetext-2-bundle-for-playframework) and it seems
pretty easy to add your own actions -

Sublime Text 2 for coding away like a madman, then when it comes time to debug I use IntelliJ Ultimate Edition (Lucky enough that work paid for it) but I also use Eclipse for Android development so I'm all over the place.
