I checked out my project (from mercurial of course) on another machine
and calling play from app dir I get

play! 2.0-RC3-SNAPSHOT, http://www.playframework.org

This is not a play application!

I get the same error even when I am calling play from within the
Play20/framework directory. Anyone can orientate me?

You should call the play command from the project root directory (not app/).

Maybe some important files are not versioned?
See https://github.com/playframework/Play20/wiki/Anatomy
All the directories shown here must be versioned, excepted the target/
and logs/ directories.

You may be right. Finally I moved my application dir, created a new
play application and copied my sources to it and I am back in business.
