New Bie to play framework

Hi All,

Being from Data Warehouse background and just bookish knowledge of Java/J2EE I am trying to learn play framework for fun only. But its getting serious now.

Reading the official tutorial was very interesting and easy until I reached templates. Does it mean I have to learn Scala as well ?

I cannot proceed further without creating templates, so I am stuck currently.

One  crucial thing in learning a language is its application as you proceed. For example whatever you learnt so far you want to code and see it in action. But in Java/J2EE it seems one has to learn a bit of everything before one can develop a working application.

 I remember in .net days I was able to develop fairly complex CRUD applications in 2-3 days but its not even close for Java.

I am desperate to learn J2EE (with play framework/GWT)  so please help before I give up :-)

There's very little Scala that you need to know to use the Java version of Play Framework.  The template syntax is pretty straightforward to learn:

The one place where it's tricky as a Java programmer is if you want to build a plug-in for the build system.  But as long as you're just doing simple stuff like adding dependencies, etc. then it's pretty easy.
