Dear Colleagues,
As we all know, the First Symposium Platonicum was held in Mexico City in 1986 following a proposal of Conrado Eggers Lan. This Symposium led Livio Rosetti to follow this initiative and to propose Perugia as the venue for a Second Symposium in 1989. On this occasion, the IPS was founded. Since then, Latin America has hosted the Association just once, in Brasilia, on the occasion of the XI Symposium Platonicum in 2016. Meanwhile, as many of you have had the opportunity to confirm, the community of scholars working on Ancient Philosophy in general and particularly on Plato has considerably increased. It is undeniable that this occurs during difficult times, not just for the studies on Ancient Philosophy but for the Humanities as such, and not just in Latin America but in the whole world. It is in order to support this growing Latin American community that I propose Lima as the venue for the XV Symposium Platonicum in 2028.
To move from Brasilia to Lima is tantamount to change from a modern, relative newly founded city, to a city with a long history. Founded by the Spanish conquerors in 1535, it had already a pre-Hispanic history. We can still see the architecture and atmosphere of the colonial times in downtown Lima and some of the 400 or so pre-Hispanic adobe temples and pyramids that the Spanish chroniclers of that era tell us about. Even part of the actual irrigation system of the city was built in pre-Hispanic times. Situated in the middle of a desert close to the Andes and facing toward the Pacific Ocean, Lima is very easy to reach from any country in North or South America. As regards Europe, there are direct flights from Amsterdam, Paris and Madrid.
I have to add that Lima and more specifically the 1917-founded Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru, has a history with the IPS. I hosted an IPS Regional Meeting in 2000, a few years after Tom Robinson’s visit during his tour of Latin American to make the IPS known. Colleagues from Germany and Mexico, Brazil and the USA, Argentina and Spain, Canada and Italy met here. I cannot forget Tom telling me how happy he was about this “feast of the Logos.” Of course, such a compliment speaks first and foremost for the scholars involved, but it also speaks to the venue and the local atmosphere. We also held a successful MidTerm-Meeting on Koinonia in Plato’s Philosophy last year. Some of the papers published in our journal Areté Vol. 34, 2022 (https://revistas.pucp.edu.pe/index.php/arete) can be found here. Furthermore, I can state that we have some experience organizing conferences such as the Symposium Platonicum.

Dear Raúl,
This is to proclaim my support for your proposal. Lima would be a great place to host the 15th Symposium Platonicum.
Good luck
