Number of characters accepted by citext

Dear Friends,

I created the column with datatype as NCHAR(250) but when is described the column with resultsetmeta i got the data type as citext. 
Why it is doing so? And what is the maximum number of characters that can be stored in citext if the size is 2147483647.
Plese answer me as soon as possible.
