Joe:
Do you think this is another vanity meeting for them to tell us they are doing all that they can? I'm just so over the filth and them running the neighborhood. I really don't want to listen any of the excuses anymore.

Mike,

It probably is.

I am working on a plan to start a non-profit for the area that would advocate more holistically and with a specific focus on our area.

We should sit down and talk soon. What are you up to Sunday?

Hi Joe,
I will be writing a letter to Caltrans requesting that they better secure the open lot on Plata - whether it be installing proper gates on either end of the lot (on Hoover and on the other end near the entrance to the Silver Lake Blvd on ramp to the 101N) or to surrender the land for an alternative use that will improve the neighborhood.  Who would be the key people that should see this letter and to whom I should address it to?

We are still struggling to keep unauthorized people from squatting, pitching tents, littering, and burning fires in that open lot.  In fact, I have had to call LAPD in the last week because there were a couple of homeless people camped out and burning a warming fire at night and directly behind my house.  Luckily the fire remained contained and they left (but not before leaving an old mattress and a mess of trash strewn everywhere) but I refuse to continue to take a backseat on this and allow Caltrans to neglect that land when there have been multiple complaints and safety concerns brought to their attention.

Let me know your thoughts - also I can be available this Sunday if you'd like to meet to further discuss.

Thanks,
Zinah

I sent an inquiry to de Leon's office a few months ago about the abuses on the land and never got a reply.

Currently there is junk and garbage strewn along the sidewalk under the bridge, and I noticed this morning that some of it has been dumped along the side of the corner property across the street from me. It's a nightly ritual with the bicycles congregating in the intersection at Hoover and Plata. It's so disconcerting to know that these people do not live here and to not know whether they are bad or not.

The building next to me has rented a unit to someone who still collects on the street and some of that population visit him. There was one person he didn't like and he was chasing him with a knife. I sometimes sleep on my couch nowadays just to be away from the noise.

I'm so tired of it all

I don't think I can meet this Sunday, but next Sunday is a possibility.

Zinah,

Along with the contact at CalTrans and the head of the entire agency, I would address it to Councilman Mitch O'Farrell, State Senator Kevin De Leon, State Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez. In addition I would put the governor on it.

I would send it to all their offices.

I'd be happy to circulate a draft of the letter to all the Plata Neighborhood Watch meeting emails and ask that they sign and send a copy as well.

I am looking into setting up a non-profit that could advocate for the neighborhood and possibly contribute financially to these kinds of commonsense solutions. I'm considering a fundraiser once a year as the funding mechanism and then working with donors in the area.
I'll keep in touch on that.

Please let me know when you have the letter ready. I will double check the name of the contact at CalTrans and email you on that.
