Dear All

Greener Upon Thames is about to launch a campaign for the 2010 Games
to be plastic-bag-free.

As a start, I've just posted a comment at the GLA website on their
report (http://www.london.gov.uk/publication/going-green#comment-488)
warning there is as still much work to do if the 2012 Olympic and
Paralympic Games are to meet the environmental promises made by
organisers. I've suggested that an easy green win and a great example
for the world would be for the London Olympics to be plastic-bag-
free.

If you can find the time to register on the GLA site and add a
suportive comment, that would be great, especially from London PBF
groups - but as the Olympics are a national showcase, I think everyone
could join in!

Best wishes and thanks

Update on PBF Olympics campaign

Dear All

Thank you for your support of the Greener Upon Thames campaign to make
the London 2010 Olympics plastic-bag-free – in case you haven't yet
signed it, our petition is at athttp://www.gopetition.com/petition/40435.html

Currently Greener Upon Thames is in conversation with people at London
Assembly (Mayor Boris tends now to deny that he ever said he wanted
London to be PBF for the Olympics - though he probably did!) and with
LOCOG, the 2012 Olympics committee - and we would welcome more help in
a couple of ways:

Firstly, we have found that LOCOG is moving towards a "long-life"
plastic bag solution, something we, and no doubt you, are very
sceptical about and don't consider to be a sustainable solution at
all. We are busy putting together a proposal and letter contesting
this, from us and various supportive celebrities, local MPs etc to
present to these people at a meeting on 13th December. If your PBF
group would like to be be named as a supporter of our letter too you'd
be very very welcome – just contact me. London groups would be
particularly welcome, but the Olympics and their sustainability are
national issues, so all welcome really.

Secondly, if anyone has any hard data about long-life plastic bags we
could add to our proposal, we'd be very glad of it. We are working on
a comparative table (draft can be seen at
http://www.e-voice.org.uk/greenerkingston/files/view/Relative_merits.doc)
which contains most of the generic info we can find from reliable
sources, much of which is of course repeated from one source to the
other – but if know of anything we can add, again please get in touch.
.
And lastly if your group could write separately to Boris Johnson and
LOGOC (I'll post some contact details later), making the point that no
plastic bag is truly sustainable and offering viable alternatives,
that would be a huge help too.

Thanks a lot for any help you and/or your PBF group can give - it
seems to us like a winnable campaign and so worth making a big push,

Marilyn

All possible contact info for the best person to write to about the
Olympics Boris Johnson is at http://www.london.gov.uk/contact-us/city-hall
- with caveats that you probably won't get a personal reply etc etc -
but still worth doing IMO.

Postal address is:

Boris Johnson
Mayor of London
Greater London Authority
City Hall
The Queen's Walk
London SE1 2AA

email is: ma...@london.gov.uk

Letters or emails to the national press would also be also very
welcome.
