Dear PlasmaPy Community, Friends, and Colleagues,
The PlasmaPy team is excited to announce that we are organizing a mini-conference on “Growing an open source software ecosystem for plasma science,” which will be held remotely during this year’s APS DPP meeting (November 9-13). The mini-conference will be a broad presentation of open-source software for the plasma community. Possible presentation topics include, but are not limited to, overviews of existing open-source packages relevant to the field; open-source software as a research and educational tool; best practices for developing open-source code and fostering community driven development; functionality needs of the community; and promoting scientific reproducibility. We hope this mini-conference is just one of many steps to better connect the numerous open-source efforts with each other and the wider user base of the plasma community. This will lead to better adoption of open-source projects, enhanced development of projects for the community needs, better interoperability between packages, more robust functionality, and better reproducibility of scientific results.
Thus, we would like to encourage you to submit an abstract for consideration. An abstract submission to the mini-conference does not count against your submission to the main conference, but should be an independent topic. Information about abstract submission can be found at https://www.aps.org/units/dpp/meetings/annual/abstract.cfm and the abstract submission portal at http://abstracts.aps.org/index.cfm. The deadline for submission is this coming Monday, June 29th at 5 pm EDT. Presentations will be organized into 15–30 minute blocks, so please specify how much time you would prefer under the “special instructions” field. There are limited oral presentation slots, but there is a chance for posters.
Please, feel free to forward this announcement on to anyone else you think might be interested in submitting an abstract.
With best regards,
The PlasmaPy Team
