Shun Hashimoto is a gay novelist living in Okinawa who meets Mio Chibana, an orphaned high school student living with his relatives after his mother's death. However, Mio's reaction towards Shun reaching out to him reminds him of the estrangement from his parents after they discovered his sexual orientation. As Shun and Mio grow closer, Mio confesses that he is moving to the city, but promises to keep in contact once there.
Three years later, Mio suddenly moves back and confesses he is in love with Shun, but Shun is overcome with guilt from depriving him of a "normal" life. Meanwhile, Shun's childhood friend and ex-fiance, Sakurako, arrives at the island to persuade him to return to Hokkaido due to his father's poor health. Shun is adamant on staying with Mio, but Mio urges him to return to reconcile with his family. Realizing Mio is genuinely in love with him and sensing the truth in his words, Shun decides to return to Hokkaido and asks Mio to accompany him.
With Mio accompanying him, Shun visits his parents' house in Hokkaido and discovers Fumi, his younger brother adopted during his absence, and Sakurako had tricked him into reconciling with his father. Shun and Mio move in with the Hashimotos, with Shun's father and Fumi struggling to fully accept them as a couple.[5] During Parents' Observation Day at Fumi's school, Shun unexpectedly runs into Wada, his classmate and first, albeit unrequited love.[6] In the spring, Shun publishes his first novel and instantly gains media attention in spite of his anonymity due to being branded as a gay novelist. Five years later, Shun has taken a break from writing novels, while Fumi has become rebellious and resents him for rejecting Sakurako.
L'tranger de la Plage is written and illustrated by Kanna Kii, and it is her debut manga work.[1] It was serialized in the bimonthly manga anthology On BLUE from 2013 to 2014. The chapters were later released in one bound volume by Shodensha under the Feel Comics On BLUE imprint. The manga is distributed in English by Renta! under the title The Stranger by the Beach.[10] In December 2020, Seven Seas Entertainment announced that it had acquired the license to the series for release in July 2021 under the title Seaside Stranger: Umibe no tranger.[11]
The manga was followed up with a sequel series titled L'tranger du Zphyr, which began publication in vol. 14 of On BLUE that was released on July 25, 2014.[12] The chapters were later released in bound volumes by Shodensha under the On BLUE Comics imprint. In May 2021, Seven Seas Entertainment announced that it had acquired the license to the series under the title Seaside Stranger: Harukaze no tranger[13]
L'tranger de la Plage was adapted into a drama CD starring Taishi Murata as Shun and Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Mio and was released on August 26, 2016.[14] An exclusive talk CD was included at a bonus for a limited time at Animate.[5] A drama CD adaptation of volume 1 of L'tranger du Zphyr was released on October 27, 2017.[7][15]
On October 25, 2019, Fuji TV announced that they were producing an anime film adaptation of L'tranger de la Plage as part of its Blue Lynx boys' love anime label, set for a theatrical release on September 11, 2020.[1][27] The film was animated by Studio Hibari and directed by Akiyo Ohashi.[1] Kii, who had previously been an animator, supervised the film and was in charge of the character designs.[1] Mina Kubota composed the music for the film, while the band Mono no Aware performed the film's theme song, "Zokkon" (From the Bottom of My Heart).[28] Funimation acquired the rights for the film in North America, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and Mexico, streaming it on their website from July 9, 2021.[29]
In 2014, L'tranger de la Plage was ranked #5 on the list of recommended boys' love stories in a survey of 470 employees across 400 bookstores nationwide in Japan.[30] Referring to Kii's experience as an animator, Kozue Aou from Kono Manga ga Sugoi! praised her use of color contrasts, long shots and close-ups of the characters, and camera work that "speaks eloquently about the character's heart."[16]
The second volume of L'tranger du Zphyr debuted at #48 on Oricon, selling 17,457 copies in its first week.[31] Kozue Aou from Kono Manga ga Sugoi! described the first volume of L'tranger du Zphyr as "expressive" and a "first-class product" that "reflects the complex emotions of each character", describing Shun and Mio's journey to Hokkaido as having "warmth" that was realistic.[19]
Kim Morrisy of Anime News Network gave the film adaptation a 'B-' rating, and stated "I think that it needed more time to develop its characters, especially Mio, more effectively, but there were tantalizing glimpses of a satisfying love story here."[32] Matt Schley from The Japan Times rated the film 2.5 out of 5, and stated "In adapting the excellent manga, the team behind this film have proved once again that more is less."[33]
Previously to living in Okinawa and after leaving his Parents house we find out he lived and worked in Tokyo for a while at the publishing company through which he now publishes his books. Back then he was at a low point and wanted nothing more than to change and become straight. A stranger hits on him and being at his lowest he decides to go to a love hotel with him. Before anything could happen though it turns into a deep conversation of Shun venting to the Stranger about how he always falls for his hetero friends and how he could change. In the end the Stranger gives him money and kisses him. After many years and Mio and Shun moving to Tokyo he coincidentally runs into him again.
Mio has black mid-length hair (his hair-style changed throughout the Volumes), which he often wears in a half-up, half-down hair-style. He has dark-grey colored eyes. Mio has a average build and is commonly seen wearing casual and comfy clothing.
He wears a red and black checkered shirt with a dark grey cardigan. He wears plain light-coloured trousers and his signature sandals. On his wrist, Mio wears the bracelets he and his mom used to make.
After the 5 years skip we see, that Mio has grown out his hair, due to Shun commenting early on in Volume 1 of L'tranger du Zphyr, that he liked Mios hair longer. With his hair almost reaching his lower back he likes to wear it in a braid.
Due to his early loss of both parents and hard work, Mio develops a good sense of responsibility, especially when he takes on the habit of doing all the chores around Shuns parents house in Volume 4 and 5. He often unconsciously tires himself out with balancing the household and his job.
Three years later, Mio returns to the island. He and Eri have arranged for him to move into Shun's grandmother's house, and instantly he becomes happy when he sees Shun again. Feeling like an adult now where he can do what he wants, Mio is set on being with Shun and is confused regarding Shun's distantness.
With Sakurako having arrived on the island, Mio learns that she was the woman Shun was supposed to marry. He shows her around the island when she would like to talk. Later Mio shares the reason he's often seen staring out to sea. His father's boat capsized close to shore before he was born, and his mother would always bring him to the beach at night before passing away herself.
As Sakurako is departing the island, she requests a goodbye kiss from Shun. Mio gives it instead and is upset at Shun since Mio felt if he had not done so, Shun would have done it. Wanting to know why he accepted her right away, Mio says he is done with everything. He sulks in bed at home and is not hungry then shouts further that he will eat it later.
Despite the situation, Mio wants them to sleep together, so they do. After Shun decides he will also visit his family, Mio is by the bench facing the sea. Wondering what he thought when he decided to leave the island for three years, he is glad Shun found him then. Having a phone now Mio says he will call Shun and asks whether he is OK with that. Mio is asked by Shun to come with him to Hokkaido. Agreeing to do so since he wants to be with Shun, Mio spontaneously says for them to swim in the ocean because he is happy.
At first excited to be on his first flight, Mio is quickly overcome by panic. He and Shun disembark to continue the rest of the journey by boat. Although he is happy to see a radio tower as Shun has to go to the bathroom whilst Mio focuses on the sights, his nervousness amongst crowds is agitated. As he is comforted, he overhears people commenting that he and Shun are holding hands, so he stops.
Both of them move to Shun's parents house. Mio loves spending time with Shun's adoptive 7 year old brother, Fumi. Because of Shun wanting more privacy for them, they move to a house Shun's parents owned. Mio celebrated his birthday with Shun's family. On Christmas when Shun was giving Mio a Christmas present. Fumi came to tell them about the gift Santa gave him ( Mio actually gave him the gift ) and saw what both of them were doing and was traumatized. Mio was frustrated and tried to convince Fumi that it was not what is looks like. But failed miserably. Shun bought Mio a guitar and he would play it a lot.
After a 5 year time skip, Mio has grown his hair long and keeps it braided. Mio seems to be doing all of the house work despite Shun's mother being present. Because of Shun being famous and Mio being busy both of them find it really hard to spend quality time. Mio now has to constantly put up with Fumi who is going through his rebellious phase.
After Shun speaks with him, Mio made an effort to interact further. After kissing him goodbye, three years later, Mio returns and feels he is ready to be with Shun, as well as kiss and sleep with him. Living with him, Mio would encourage Shun with his writing but wondered whether Shun even liked him anymore as he barely contacted him in the three years Mio was gone. Mio and Shun are currently in both a sexual and romantic relationship.
