When Tracey turned 50, her son wanted a dog. She had never had a dog in childhood or adulthood, so a good friend came over and helped them write a list of what they wanted in a dog. The friend told them about shelter dogs and off they went!

Of course they took their list to a shelter and found their first dog, Boston. It was love at first sight. A year after that they found another four footed friend, Harper, at a dog park. She was there that day with her foster family. One thing led to another and she joined Boston as part of the family.

The experience changed Tracey's heart forever (you dog people know what she means). She came to understand the shelter system and fostering knew there was a need, so at first she gave money. Then she started attending shelter events and in the beginning of this same year, she started volunteering at the SPCA in McKinney, Texas.

She says it's a miracle she hasn't taken home twenty dogs yet!
As she and her family started the adoption process for Harper, Tracey wondered what the dog's list might look like for a family. This funny idea quickly became a passion to write a kid's book that shelters could use as a fundraising tool.

Shelters depend on donations and Tracey felt this could be a win win for everyone. Families would get a fun book to share with their kids and those kids could start an early education on adopting dogs from shelters.

Add to that the fact that the shelters would win with additional revenue and you have a perfect combination.

As Tracey said when she realized "Special Paws" was hers to write, " Who knew I could publish my first children's book at 53??"
