Once you have the IRC program of your choice, connect to
irc.freenode.net --

/server irc.freenode.net

if your nickname isn't set, set it (or to change it once it is set)
/nick awfief

join the group
/join #mysql.planet

what's the date and time?
/date

Who else is on the channel?
/names #mysql.planet
/who

set yourself as away, with a message
/away gone for lunch

toggle away (will set you away if you're not, and set you back if you
are away)
/away

leave the group
/leave #mysql.planet

quit
/quit

third person narrative (ie, "awfief gets a soda")
/me gets a soda.

privately message someone
/msg awfief so, how is that rash?

log what you see
/set log on

change logfile name
/set logfile newFilename
