Many worldwide discussion groups seem to be ignorant of the reality
that Bangladesh has been exploring this full range for a long time now
the full range seems to go from how to start a new branch in the
poorest of the female poorest place still to be found in a nation or
region , or indeed how to offer zero per cent interest loans to female
beggars within that place coordinated specifically by the branch staff
UP UP UP
to how to offer loans to start up small business in villages that are
now eg 20 years into community banking
there's also an in between at least in grameen's case - this is where
grameen has developed a franchise, and a villager can take out a loan
to operate a local franchise - the mobile telephone lady is one such
loan and franchise contract (now 200000+ franchises) and its revenues
for those who were earlier or smartest at networking it are way beyond
individual income; telecenhtres will soon be an even clearer sme
franchise
(incidentally it is probably the case in grameen that among the 3% of
loans made to men, nore are at the microentterprise level for natural
reasons- equally these men are those who have become erspectful of
theiur wives as founding dfemale memners of the bank - I believe 5 bof
us spent an hour in the home of precisely one such combo - both son
and elderly husband were involved in microentreprises funded out of
grameen but there was absolutely no doubt that the female member was
in charge and indeed she was the leader of the 60-women centre, if you
like the number 1 entreprenur in her catchment area -or in this case
for all I know one of the 12 village female members on the board of
grameen bank)
another example is take out a contract to install solar energy in a
building also used as business - for example if a cafe without light
takes out a solar energy contract its after-dark reveneus as the only
meeting place in te vilage may multiply by an orger of magnitude what
was previously a one person business
its also the case that since grameen is designed around a network of
140000 CENTRE-hubs- if one villager does develop a smalll business
concept with value in a village, grameen positively encourages its
open franchising through loan contracts at the right side to sustain
it; the 140000 centre-hub model was nicely discussed as an
entrepreneurial revolution of channel marketing (where the society
owns te brand channel) by the head of grameen foundation in this
article
http://www.ssireview.org/articles/entry/reimagining_microfinance
and of course future capitalism is spawning a new type of
sustainability investment fund something that is being connected
across europe out of paris by danonecommunities and grameen credit
agricole associates
I am sure that the other big banglkadeshi mfi have also gone beyond
just individual oans and look forward to your debriefs
