I’m happy to announce that this Thursday’s HPAC meeting at our usual 3:30 PM CST time will be devoted to a panel discussion on the nature and enormous potential of biochar(s) to sequester carbon, revitalize soils and economies and help cool the planet.

Please circulate this invitation to friends, colleagues, and other lists you may belong to.

The moderator is Dr. Brian Von Herzen. a member of the HPAC Steering Circle and the founder of the Climate Foundation. Brian is leading a successful Marine Permaculture sea forestation demonstration project in the Philippines and recently was awarded an X Prize to accelerate this project.

The panelists include:

Albert Bates

Albert is a veteran climate activist, inventor, author of 20 books, leader in the Ecovillage movement and entrepreneur. He has also been the.Director of the Global Village Institute for Appropriate Technology. He describes himself as an emergency planetary technician.

He co-authored along with Katherine Draper: BURN: Using Fire to Build a New Carbon Economy and Cool the Planet.

I would also highly recommend his weekly blog The Great Change, at cooldesign.substack.com

Paul Anderson PhD

Paul is a retired university professor who is widely known in the biomass stoves and biochar realms as “Dr TLUD” (a reference to a specific type of stove technology).  He holds degrees from Augustana College, the University of California, Berkeley, and the Australian National University.  He has lived twenty adult years outside of the United States, including when he was a Fulbright Professor in Brazil and Mozambique, and he has been an active Rotarian for nearly forty years.  His ability to perceive and utilize new opportunities along well-worn paths is expressed in his personal logo, the Upright Egg.

Dear all,

My input on biochar and climate mitigation in attached paper.  Biochar has potential for promoting carbon circularity and some climate benefit, as long as it is not stored by mixing into agricultural fields.  One should consider developing deep storage pits so it requires minimal surface area (and cover them with MEER sheetings).

Have a good discussion,

Ye
