Professor Parson is Distinguished Dan and Rae Emmett Professor of Environmental Law and Faculty Director, Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, University of California Los Angeles.  He has written extensively on the Montreal Protocol on Ozone Depleting Substances, and on climate intervention.

Dear Colleagues,

Ted Parson will be joining us this coming week at our members forum (see announcement below). It would be very timely moment to have you with us for this conversation.

I just ran across Pall Gunnarsson's article for SRM360 a few days ago that was entitled:

Iceland and the AMOC: When Existence Is at Stake


It was a great short and pithy piece of work. I was particularly struck by his proposition that:

“Iceland could realistically convene a coalition of like-minded nations and philanthropic funders to mount a concentrated effort to determine whether SRM could help stabilise the AMOC.”

It is heartening that more voices are speaking out to support coalition-building among nations. As you know, The Healthy Planet Action Coalition has been engaged for the past 15 months now in many countries across the globe to build such a coalition to address the great global heating emergency. 

Pall Gunnarsson, Paul Gambill and I will be having a brainstorm on Tuesday to explore prospects for linking the Iceland and Nordic interests in a coalition with those arising  in Asia and Africa through the efforts of many of our colleagues.

Thus, it’ll be very interesting to brainstorm with you further on Thursday on how to most effectively create such a global coalition.

Mark is currently working on a mass-market book that will be the first to directly propose an SRM program to keep the planet within the 2C upper guardrail of the Paris Agreement. He is going to share his book proposal - currently under consideration by his previous publisher Bloomsbury - and get feedback from our experts group. 

This meeting will accordingly be somewhat confidential and will not be recorded so that the discussions can be candid and helpful without being fully public. 

Mark is also science advisor at the 74-country Climate Vulnerable Forum, which represents 1.8 billion people in the Global South - almost none of whom, top government officials included, even know that SRM is an option. 

He is also policy lead with WePlanet, a grassroots pro-science environmental NGO/movement that is looking at running a global impact campaign demanding more ambitious research and development of SRM, including field-scale trials. 

This promises to be an important conversation - please do join us.

The latest science indicates that global temperature acceleration has intensified enormously. Projections now indicate that it is likely that we may reach 2 degrees by around 2030 and possibly 2.5 degrees by one decade from now:

India and The Philippines are two of the world’s most climate vulnerable countries in the world. Both have been experiencing brutal weather disasters affecting hundreds of millions of people that have been exacerbated by climate change.

Tom Harris and Jan Umsonst

In part 1, Tom will discuss climate change acceleration using the latest CERES data, looking in particular at the role of El Niños as ratchet moments creating jumps in global warming. The predictions for the ‘Goliath’ 2026 event have some worrying prognoses. He’ll discuss the fact that 90% of the accumulating energy goes into the oceans, but is not evenly distributed by depth. Ocean stratification in increasing with a number of impacts. 

 

After this introductory Part 1, in Part 2, Jan will dive deeper into…

 

In part 2, Jan will show some of the main signals inside the system that indicate that we are in the unquantifiable worst case scenario now. The presentation will be based on a sheet where he assembled the main aspects of the vicious feedback cycle between the upper oceans and atmosphere which we are in the process of triggering now.

Tom has a PhD in machine learning for signal processing from Brunel University, back before it was called AI. He spent his early career as a University lecturer in Engineering and researching Neural Computing applications before spinning out a medical device company using the technology. He has spent the last 25 years working with over 200 grant funded projects covering a wide range of technologies but including carbon capture, smart energy grids and energy efficiency. Now retired, he writes on climate science on his Substack “Climate Uncovered” with the aim of translating complex scientific papers for a wider audience. He also applies his data processing and machine learning experience to interpret climate data sets.

Jan became a political activist since he heard that the oceans are acidifying in 2007. Since then he wanted to understand Earth system changes as if something as big as the oceans are acidifying we seem to live in truly important times. Throughout all these years he hunted for important changes in the Earth system. With time he understood that all are interconnected be it directly or indirectly and that the whole biophysical system can break down. In recent years it became clear that we are in the process to trigger a mighty feedback reaction which operates via the dynamical parts of Earth. To stop the cascade towards extinction the full potential of humanity will be needed. If we do not stabilize the Earth system human civilization won't be able to adapt. At the center of our problem lie oceans that accumulate heat way too fast. We increased GHG levels 4-10 times faster than it ever happened before. The problem: the strength of the feedback's is rate dependent

Tom Harris and Jan Umsonst

 

In part 1, Tom will discuss climate change acceleration using the latest CERES data, looking in particular at the role of El Niños as ratchet moments creating jumps in global warming. The predictions for the ‘Goliath’ 2026 event have some worrying prognoses. He’ll discuss the fact that 90% of the accumulating energy goes into the oceans, but is not evenly distributed by depth. Ocean stratification in increasing with a number of impacts. 

 

After this introductory Part 1, in Part 2, Jan will dive deeper into…

 

In part 2, Jan will show some of the main signals inside the system that indicate that we are in the unquantifiable worst case scenario now. The presentation will be based on a sheet where he assembled the main aspects of the vicious feedback cycle between the upper oceans and atmosphere which we are in the process of triggering now.

Tom Harris

Tom has a PhD in machine learning for signal processing from Brunel University, back before it was called AI. He spent his early career as a University lecturer in Engineering and researching Neural Computing applications before spinning out a medical device company using the technology. He has spent the last 25 years working with over 200 grant funded projects covering a wide range of technologies but including carbon capture, smart energy grids and energy efficiency. Now retired, he writes on climate science on his Substack “Climate Uncovered” with the aim of translating complex scientific papers for a wider audience. He also applies his data processing and machine learning experience to interpret climate data sets.
