Subject: [HPAC] HPAC Forum this week: Ocean Pasture Restoration with Russ George

Please join the Healthy Planet Action Coalition this Thursday, 2 October at 5.30 pm Eastern Time, for a conversation with Russ George on Ocean Pasture Restoration.

Link is https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88954851189?pwd=2OEdvleb4UpYfK4a950ryohFWcw93F.1 (passcode 662519).

The meeting will go for up to 90 minutes.  Thursday 5.30 pm Eastern = 10.30pm UK = 7.30 am Friday Australia AEST

In 2012, Russ George worked with the Haida Salmon Restoration Corporation in British Columbia to add iron to the waters of the North Pacific Ocean at the point where salmon fingerlings most needed food. The project encountered criticism from scientific and environmental organisations and media.

Russ will share his perspective on the science and politics of ocean replenishment and restoration and its potential role in climate cooling and fisheries enhancement.

His presentation will be followed by open discussion.  Russ’s website is https://russgeorge.net/

Regards

Robert Tulip

Dear Mark,

I think you ought to know that the Planetary Restoration Action Group (PRAG), a sister organisation to HPAC with more radical aims, has just submitted a letter and supporting document to the EU, in their request for comment on EU Arctic policy; see attached below.  This is relevant to your talk on Thursday, which unfortunately I am unable to attend.

Sadly the UK is no longer a member of the EU, otherwise you would not doubt have seen our submission.  It is as relevant to the UK as to the EU as regards protecting its citizens against what would happen if the Arctic were to continue its meltdown without SAI cooling intervention.  The rapid warming of the Arctic has become the main driver for the weather extremes we are seeing with increasing severity caused by a sticking jet stream wave.  Continued Arctic warming and ice mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet, compounded by mass loss from Antarctic glaciers, and supplemented by ocean expansion from global warming (anticipated to reach 4C before 2100 by extrapolation from the existing warming rate) is almost bound to lead to metres of sea level rise this century unless the Arctic temperature is substantially lowered.  Only SAI has the power to do this.

We argue, from the scientific evidence, that SAI is urgently needed to refreeze the Arctic.  We propose that Europe should take the lead in preparations and testing for SAI deployment.   I think this goes a lot further than ARIA would venture, unless its remit is upgraded.  Is there a chance?  Any possibility of US action soon has been scuppered by Trump.  Time is of the essence, since risks are escalating.

I look forward to your response.

Kind regards,
John Nissen, chair of PRAG

We have a special guest joining us this session: Mr Mark Symes, Programme Director at the UK's Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA).

Mark will be updating us on the work that ARIA is doing to support the development of governance systems for SRM research, for guiding decisions on deployment, and ARIA's support

for preliminary design work on SRM field testing.

Please join us for a stimulating discussion.

Thanks, and Onwards,

Dennis
