--It will be especially important to document changes in temperature and albedo in the Arctic this year. Peter Wadhams’ forecast of an Ice-Free Arctic Summer may be nigh!
Notice the residual HotSpots in the Southern Hemisphere Winter in the South Indian Ocean and South Atlantic! Bleaching HotSpots are hotter than 1C above the average historical temperature at those sites at the WARMEST time of year. That persistence is extraordinary, and may mark a shift in ocean circulation patterns. The one near Kergulen has now been there for a couple of years.

Subject: RE: Hot Arctic aheadThanks for clarifying that the map is seasonal (May-Aug) only. Yep, the reef has been very severely bleached during recent years. MCB is yet to be demonstrated successfully – but will be discussed in a forthcoming HPAC forum event

This map is a forecast for May-August, which is winter in the GBR. There was very severe bleaching across the South Pacific earlier this year, but the GBR got off lightly this year. However, cumulative stresses of the previous severe bleaching years have left GBR coral cover at the lowest ever.

This coral reef stress map appears to show no stress for the Qld Barrier Reef, although other parts of southern oceans have “alert level 2”. Is this a lack of data?

Subject: [HPAC] Hot Arctic ahead
Above is the latest summer forecast for the Coral Bleaching HotSpot, a measure of extreme high Sea Surface Temperature (SST), with dark red being the most extremely severe excess above historical baselines.
The El Niño now underway is affecting the coral reefs of the Central Pacific, but recent estimates say that the corals in these areas are already 99.9% dead, so the bleaching impacts will affect those last surviving 0.1%.
More alarming is the situation in the Arctic Basin, which forecasts total extreme temperatures. Could 2026 see complete floating ice melt in the Arctic and accelerated albedo feedback?
