Dear Restorers,
We could also travel one more step farther with this discovery. We can create additional Arctic peatlands, either by throwing beaver-sized or larger dams across streams or by creating a series of rice paddy walls on a slightly contoured landscape. The newly created microbogs might only absorb peat for a century or two before they fill up with peat, but perhaps a century or two is what we need right now.
Peatlands in general will sequester carbon dioxide. We could set up new peatlands or restore existing peatlands in many biomes. Natural sequestration is more politically popular than mechanical carbon sequestration. However, remember to put up bat houses and purple martin birdhouses to keep local mosquito levels low. Otherwise neighbors might object.
Yours in Hope,
Paul Klinkman
