Dear Peter,

I note that our old friends, Natalia Shakhova and Igor Semiletov, are co-authors of this paper [1], which lends authenticity.

Natalia was the person who warned us, many years ago, of the possibility and consequences of a 50 gigaton outburst of methane from ESAS (with Laptev Sea, etc.).  Did you ever meet her?

Best wishes, John

Hi all,

The reason for the record rise in methane emissions in the early 20s is given an explanation here.  Other articles also mention a decline in hydroxyl radicals which are the main removers of methane from the atmosphere.  If there is a surge in methane, its lifetime will be lengthened due to the store of hydroxyl radicals being depleted.

Scientists explain why methane emissions spiked in the early 20s

Atmospheric methane levels rose by 55 parts per billion between 2019 and 2023, reaching a record 1921 ppb in 2023.
The rate of increase peaked in 2021 at nearly 18 ppb, an 84% jump compared with 2019.

Cheers, John
