The ASA program is a development education learning and exchange programme. It promotes young, motivated students and professionals to extend their skills in creating a global sustainable development.
We are addressing you because we are still looking for project proposals for the upcoming year. Proposals for the year 2015 can be handed in until the 15th of September 2014.
With the South-North Program, ASA offers its participants a learning programme consisting of a practical phase in the North, a practical phase in the South and accompanying training seminars: The North Phase will take place in Germany in the three months from April to June, the South Phase in countries of Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and South-Eastern Europe in the three months from August to October. A team - consisting of participants from the host country in the South as well as from the North - realizes both phases in a joint effort. In doing so they are supported by the Northern and Southern partner organizations. The character of the projects is similar to an internship. At the same time they are an experience in intercultural learning: a place in which young adults from the global North and South are working together and mutually learning from each other. With the accompanying seminars in April and June the ASA program offers its participants a frame which supports intercultural learning in the team.
By working together in the projects, the participants are making an active contribution to the project aims of the hosting organizations, e.g. by realizing minor studies, designing workshops or contributing to public relations work. The focus should always be set on collaboration at eye level.
Project proposals for the South-North-Program can be handed in by organizations that meet the following criteria:
- Between the two organizations in North and South have already been established firm partnership relations and communication structures.
- The aims of the organizations are compatible with the principles of sustainable development.
- The organizations are open for the support of a team of two to four motivated trainees from South and North, of whom not everybody exhibits German language skills.
- The organizations are prepared to support project planning and orientation of the trainees in an (to them) unfamiliar environment, to offer them adequate working conditions and to accompany their process of working.
For the success of a South-North Project - besides the existence of a cooperating partner organization - the choice of an adequate project issue is basic. It should be an issue of actual importance in the field of development policy that creates a link between the two countries involved. To be preferred are topics that give insight in global interdependencies and the shared responsibilities of North and South countries, such as global production and consumption structures, climate change or migration. Also possible are topics that show similarities between the two countries, as for example work with disadvantaged teenagers or environmental education.
The annual theme 2015 of the ASA program is “Degrowth” / “Urban horticulture”. Therefore, we are particularly looking forward to project proposals from this field.
From the collaboration during several months rises a joint experience, which can be taken advantage of for development education and Global Learning in North and South. Thus good partnership relations of the participating organizations are an essential condition for a successful South-North Project.
The opportunity for you as hosting organizations lies in the qualified support of your work by young, motivated participants from Europe and the Global South, which are carefully selected and trained. With activities in the field of development education ASA-participants also contribute to making public their work in Germany and the participating countries. In their role as multipliers they enhance the understanding for global interdependencies while at the same time lobbying for their organizations.
Please keep in mind that the South-North Projects of the ASA Program are not to be seen as jobs to be done by experts from the North or visiting and trainee programs for participants from the South. As a matter of course the young adults are being prepared most professionally for their South-North Project. Besides the practical phase ASA offers them during the span of one year a learning cycle consisting of preparatory and post-project seminars.
Please note, the projects do not include financial or material support for the partner organizations on behalf of the ASA Program. ASA grants the German participants a partial fellowship. Additional costs are being paid by the participants. Therefore the Southern partnership organization will not have to pay any expenses.
As to the financing of the North phase, ASA contributes with the amount of 2.140 Euro per participant from the South. Of this sum are withheld 290 Euro for the insurance of the fellowship holders. The rest of the means granted by ASA can be used flexibly. Additionally occurring costs are to be paid by the Northern partnership organization by their own means or fundraising. Therefore we kindly ask you to send along with the project proposal a financial budget indicating the costs concerning the North phase and the means in which third-party funds are meant to be generated.
You find the project proposal form and further explications in the attachment of this email. Until the end of October the project selection committee will decide which of the incoming proposals will be realized in 2015.
