One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed. Proverbs 11:24, 25

The Word to live by: This looks a whole lot like “give to get,” but what I want you to see is the true meaning of generosity is a selfless attitude. When you “freely give,” you are giving with no strings attached, which includes nothing in return. A truly generous person gives a significant portion of what he has to meet the needs of others, and he does so with no expectation of receiving anything in return. (One of the biggest lies of the devil you will hear in your thought life is, “After all I’ve done, this is the way I’m treated?” That’s giving to get, which, if you think about it, is greed on a certain level.) For whatever reason, I remember this - I had a psychology class in college where I was taught that the two greatest motivating forces in a person’s life are the desire for gain and their fear of loss. Generosity impacts both of these. True generosity will cause one of these to start and one to end. The phrase “refreshes others” covers more than simply giving money. It means to give new strength or energy to something; reinvigorate. When you are generous, it means you are more focused on meeting the genuine needs of other people, whether with money, deeds, or emotional support or assistance. You don’t have to be rich to be generous; you just have to be willing to give what you have. You would be surprised at how much emotional support at the right time means to a person in need of it, and all it costs is your time. Generosity will heal a broken spirit.
