Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven. Matthew 18:19
The Word To Live By: I want to talk a little bit about prayer today. The first thing to realize is there are different types of prayer. There’s the prayer of supplication (when you are asking for something for yourself that’s within the boundaries of the Christian life), the prayer of intercession (when you are praying for someone or something else - your spouse, next door neighbor, or a country and its leadership, for instance), the prayer of thanksgiving (thanking God for what He has done in your life, which would include His promises that lead to life and godliness), and the prayer of consecration (the dedication of one’s will to accomplish the will of God in their life that day. Most days I start out the day by saying Psalm 101. That’s a prayer of dedication and consecration.), and the prayer of faith. So, how does Matthew 18:19 fit into this? Obviously, if you pray with someone who agrees with you on a certain topic, there is a mutual understanding and belief in what the need of the prayer is. For instance, praying with your spouse for your children or your needs. I know my wife agrees with me on those subjects. We agree on our giving and also the direction we are going in life. But there is someone else that it is more important to agree with than your best friend or spouse, and that’s the Spirit of God, and the Word of God. When you agree with a promise in the Word of God, you are agreeing with both the Spirit of God and the Word of God. Remember the Word of God is THE TRUTH and THE TRUTH will override a truth. We don’t run from a truth; we simply override it with our faith in THE TRUTH. (I’ll get into that tomorrow when I talk about the prayer of faith.) When you are praying the Word of God over a situation, you always have at least one other in agreement with you. 2 Corinthians 1:20 says, “As many as are the promises of God, in Him they are yes; therefore also through Him is our Amen to the glory of God through us.” The word “amen” means,” I agree; so be it.” So in other words, when you pray the promises of God, you are agreeing with the promises of God and there is your two in agreement.
