When I enter a document and it updates I am always taken to the bottom
of the document. I find this behavior a little odd and was wondering
if it was standard. I kind of think that I should stay where I am in
the document or at least that I should be taken to the top of the
document instead of the bottom, though I do see situations where the
bottom makes more sense.

I don't really have a precise question here- maybe there should be a
setting about which behavior we prefer. Or maybe we could endlessly
discuss which way makes more sense.

i have found that if i am editing the doc then when it is synced the cursor is still at the same position relative to the top of the file, though not, of course, necessarily relative to the text.

Alright, I've narrowed down the behavior to a more specific instance.
I need to enter the specific note that gets updated before it updates
to scroll to the bottom. If I enter the app, let the note update and
then tap on it I stay at the top. But if I enter the note knowing that
an update is waiting for it then when it updates I am scrolled to the
bottom.

It seems to me that the app should behave the same way in either case
so I'd say that choosing one action and sticking with it would be
better than having both. I vote for staying at the top.

Hmm.

OK, yes -- I see what you mean here and it's a little disorienting the
first several times it happens, or at least until you learn to
anticipate it.

I guess my question here would be, why would you want to edit a
document that's currently being updated or otherwise in the middle of
the sync process and the local copy is older and will be replaced?
Because of how Dropbox works (delete/add instead of merge), I'm a
little surprised you're not getting a fair number of 'conflicted copy'
errors.

In the next update, this scroll behavior will probably stay the same
but I'll put it on our list to look at if there's a way to get the
best of both worlds.

Best regards,
- Grey

I'm using Plain Text to manage a ToDo list but my phone is often not
connected to the internet for updating when I add something.

I switched to plain text because my offline additions were constantly
being deleted with other apps and through a couple of tests Plain Text
works great for this.

I've never seen a 'conflicted copy' error. Have I just been really
lucky so far? Is Plain Text poorly suited to handle notes added while
offline?

Thanks for the reply and consideration,
Jon

Hi Jon,

OK, not the use case I had been picturing. That should work out just fine.

I had misinterpreted things, and thought you were working on the same file from multiple locations (computer and phone) without syncing, then letting Dropbox hash out the differences between the two local copies. In normal use this isn't an issue, I'm just imagining a bit of an edge case here. No worries.

Thanks for setting me straight on this one!

I agree with the OP and would definitely prefer notes always open at the top of the note.

Notes sometimes scrolling to the bottom when opened is confusing and not a great user experience!
