Dropbox has been unable to sync any notes that I've created using
PlainText. It seems to have broken at some point, and anytime I
create a new note from my iPhone, the Dropbox will continuously try to
sync with the error "Can't sync somefile.txt; permission denied". Has
anyone run into this issue?

I'm using:
Dropbox 0.7.110 (Windows 7 64-bit)
PlainText 1.1 on iPhone 4 (iOS 4.1)

Is this error being displayed on your iPhone (while running PlainText)
or on you Windows computer while Dropbox is syncing?

Thanks,
Jesse

Hi there,

Seems like this is a known issue for Dropbox. There are a several threads on their support forums which say that this can happen when one of the sync directories or file permissions become read-only. Another solution posted was to delete the dropbox cache and have it re-index.

The official Dropbox support page is here: https://www.dropbox.com/help/72 ("What do I do if Dropbox is stuck syncing, won't launch, or reports an error?")

Here's a selection of related DB forum posts:

Best regards,

The error is from my Windows desktop, whenever it's trying to sync up
with a PlainText note I just created.

Thanks, I've tried the solution on Dropbox's support page, but had no
success. Something did a number on my User folder regarding
permissions, and the "dropbox" folder under %APPDATA% isn't able to
write its cache (file system) properly. I've made sure that the
"dropbox" folder has the correct Admin permissions, but maybe some
other inherited permissions that dropbox needs has been wiped out.
You would think a reinstall would work, but it doesn't.

Problem solved here!

This problem came to me after I format and install win7. I have others pc´s with WinXP SP3 and never saw this error till now.
Ok. Permission denied let me think on folder permission. WinXP and Win7 have different rules of permission for folders.
Win7 runs all programs as user and WinXP as admin. When I save somefile.txt at winXP, my Win7 pc can´t sync because de permissions.
I close Dropbox on Win7 machine, gone to dropbox install folder and, for dropbox.exe with right-click>properties>compatibility set "run as compatibility mode">WinXP SP3  AND "run as admin" boxes.

Ok, it´s done! No problems any more.

Do this and your problems goes away, people.
Dropbox staf must see this and correct this bug.

C´ya!

A simpler solution, at least for OSX. Just follow the spinning arrow from the Dropbox folder through the various subdirectories until you find the file that isn't syncing. Then you can either delete the file, change it's permissions, or change the permissions of it's containing folder to resolve the problem.

The Dropbox icon notified me "Can't sync 1 file; permission denied message" for a small file.  The file synced successfully to my laptop but not to my PC so I knew the problem was not due to the properties of the file being sent.  I then checked the older version of the file (of the same name) on my PC using a program called Unlocker.  It turns out that the old version of the file was already open in an editor program on my computer.  Duh!  Once the old file was closed, the new file synced.
