The hand off of PlainText from Hog Bay Software to 433 Labs did not go very smoothly.

The good news is that all of your files are safe! Jesse at Hog Bay is submitting an update to his version that will get rid of the problem of the app crashing on launch. If you cannot wait until that update is available you have a couple of options:

1) try the application Jesse mention's in his post, iExplorer. This app allows you to download all of your locally and iCloud stored documents in PlainText that you can then add to the new PlainText
2) Try downloading your documents using iTunes as outlined here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4094

Option 1) is probably going to be your best bet, since option 2) does not work with iCloud or sub-folders. I plan to add more detailed instructions here, but hopefully this will help the majority of everyone having problems with the transition.

If you are still having issues please let me know in this thread.

Hi Jonathan,

Do you have a specific date or will we get a notification once update is done and files are ready to view on the old Plain Text app?

Thanks

Files do appear to be safe, but, none of that works for dropbox. On starting the new version of Plain Text it asked to create a new Plain Text 2 folder, which it did not. But, did link to dropbox, apparently to the old Plain Text folder. Writing new files to the old Plain Text folder is possible. But, though the old files are there, there seems to be no way to import them into the new version of Plain Text. They are not seen in the file list within the app.

I'm not sure. Hog Bay Software submitted an update and will hopefully be available later this week. I'll post an update here when it's available.

Ya tengo el plain text 2 es genial pero necesito que nos quites el bloqueo del anterior para salvar mis notas. Mi trabajo depende de ello.
I already have the plain text 2 is great but we need you to remove the previous lock to save my notes. My job depends on it.
Gracias y felicidades

In PlainText 2 Dropbox sync is not working. It's forever spinning. Can't see my folders with "Sync To Entire Dropbox root" option

If you have a lot of files in your Dropbox, make sure to keep the app active while the initial sync happens. It can take a very long time to do the initial sync.

Dropbox creates the new PlainText 2 folder inside a folder labeled "Apps" in the first set of folders in your dropbox account. Try looking in there to see if it was created or not. If not, I would try unlinking your dropbox account in the app and re-linking it. You can accomplish this by tapping "Settings" and then tapping "unlink dropbox account."
If you're anything like me, your documents are in a folder in your Dropbox, probably labeled "PlainText."
They maybe in disparate places in your Dropbox, also, since the previous version of PlainText synced the entirety of your Dropbox instead of just one folder.
You can consolidate the location of your documents using the Dropbox app on your phone, the web version of Dropbox, or any computer that has a folder that syncs to your Dropbox account. Any document you wish to appear in PlainText can be moved to the PlainText 2 folder in the "Apps" folder in your Dropbox account.
If you unlink your Dropbox account from the app, and re-link it again, you'll see an option to "Link to Entire Dropbox." If you choose this option, it will likely take longer to sync everything in your Dropbox, but then you can also use PlainText 2 to move files from one Dropbox location to another by using the "Edit" function in the top right corner of the folder contents you're currently viewing in Dropbox.
Hope that helps!

This is all a bit technical for me. All my docs were saved locally in the app as far as I'm aware and I need to access them!! There's info there that I need to work on right now, how do I solve this please???? Will I be able to view my docs ever again?

An update to PlainText 1 is available in the App Store. Once updated, you will be able to access your documents again.

I can't see any update to plaintext 1 on app store only the new version. Like previous contributors, all the tech stuff is too complicated for me. I just want to be able to read / transfer the docs I created on the original app and only saved on the app itself.....how do I do this please? Thanks

What an unfortunate recent history PlainText has enjoyed. The primary function must be to protect a customer's data: new features are 'nice to have', access to one's files is essential. Both owners of the PlainText app appear not to understand this.
I now have two app-created Dropbox folders: PlainText2 (created by the Hogbay app version) and 'PlainText 2' (created by the current app version): each contains a subset of my files. It is my job to reconcile this discrepancy: thankfully I have the knowledge of how to do this using the iOS DropBox app.
My iCloud files also differ between PlainText app versions. Even though I have the knowledge of how to reconcile these, I cannot do this from iOS: using the Safari app it is not possible to explore the iCloud folders.

I created an ASCII file in Windows 7 - using Textpad - and in iPad PlainText insisted it could not read it, but I could view the contents using the Dropbox app, so the file had synchronised to iPad.

So I edited the same file in OS X 10.7.5 (Lion) using TextEdit, saved but still no luck. But a new file created in OS X, with the contents copy pasted from the "unreadable" file was readable in PlainText. Could the problem be PlainText cannot read ASCII files created in Windows? All this was done in Dropbox.

Also Dropbox synchronisation was pretty poor, only uninstalling PlainText and downloading again from Apps store sorted this out.

It's frustrating to see a reliable app I've been using for a while deteriorate so much!
