Executive Committee Hui
Play Aotearoa Strategy Refresh

Ka mua, ka muri
As we enter Year 4 of our initial Strategic Plan, the current Executive Committee recently spent a fun and productive day "looking back in order to look forward",
ka mua, ka muri. It was the first
kanohi ki te kanohi meeting we have had for 18 months, and we have also recently added two new members to our small staff team, so a large part of the day was given to
whanaungatanga (connecting with each other).
In line with our commitment to developing a bicultural way of operating we had special guest and artist, Debra Bustin, take us on a journey towards a deeper understanding of
harakeke whakapapa (the way that the flax grows and its connection to the
whenua/land), its importance in
te ao Māori, related metaphor and symbolism, and associated
tikanga, since we had previously used the
harakeke to frame our strategic plan.
The rōpū then engaged in
mahi rāranga by weaving a collective
whiri out of harakeke, symbolising how the
harakeke can serve as an organisational model, connecting us all together. We then reflected on what we have accomplished so far and where to next as a group.
Top priority for us will be to connect more closely with our members in order to be relevant and effective as supporters of all our
kāiarahi tākaro (play advocates) - it is as we act collectively that we can have the most impact on the play rights and opportunities for our
tamariki and rangatahi, so we will be in touch!

Webinar #3: Reimagining the city: Implementing the Hamilton City Council Play Strategy
Play Aotearoa invites you to attend this webinar presentation and conversation with "Dr Play" this Thursday on October 6, 2022 at 12:00 pm Auckland, Wellington
time.
For 12 years
Damien has been straddling the worlds of academia and lifestyle sport, drawing from both to improve wellbeing outcomes in the communities he has been involved in. He loves his role with Sport
Waikato as the first of New Zealand’s Local Play Advocates, supporting Hamilton City Council to activate their Play Strategy.
Damien is passionate about play, its value for people and cities, and is particularly interested in how to make spaces and places multi-functional. His PhD thesis in the sociology of sport explored the global and local influences that impact on parkour practitioners
experience in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Damien remains heavily involved with parkour outside of his day job, volunteering as the CEO for Parkour NZ and the international federation Parkour Earth, as well as being an active coach and practitioner.

Play in te taiao -

A new series by Moana Wereta
In
te ao Māori
(Māori worldview), various
atua
personify and represent aspects of our natural and supernatural world. These
atua provide insight and
guidance into all aspects of our lives – including tākaro
(play).
As the winter months come to an end, Play Aotearoa are sharing some insights and fun stories involving tamariki, rangatahi and their whānau that describe how we can honour these
atua through play. The first relate to
Hine Takurua (also known as the star Sirius), the personification of winter, with a wonderful story of a pig rescue as their
whare becomes surrounded by a lake after heavy rain. The play of our children is enriched as they deepen their connections to
te taiao, the natural environment, and build awareness of the changing seasons and
maramataka, the calendar that is guided by the push and pull of the moon and the alignment of the stars.
Check it out on our website
here and look out for the next inspiring installments!
