Kia ora,

This is an invitation to join with us in planning the Kūmara Awards for 2021.

Last year we had a lot of fun creating the Kūmara Awards in Tāmaki Makaurau to celebrate amazing placemaking happening across the city. This year, we have heard from the kūmara vine that others are interested in being part of developing these awards further. There are options galore! And we’d love to plan MkII of the awards with you.

If you are interested, please join us on the 5th of May, 12-1 pm on Zoom.

Email us via con...@catalyse.co.nz and we’ll send you a zoom link.

A bit of background:

In 2020, a group of us decided to create the Kūmara Awards as a homegrown recognition of placemaking mahi across Tāmaki Makaurau. There were no nominations or announcements about the award because, just as the kūmara does not speak of its own sweetness, placemakers are often shy about talking about their placemaking work and its impact.

Here in Tāmaki Makaurau, placemakers had already developed a kawenata to guide placemaking towards contributing to the improved health of people and place. The Kūmara Awards are grounded in this document and its intentions.

So, a small diverse group of placemakers created five categories to honour our placemaking peers. These categories reflected some of the impact beyond what was visible and presented a certificate and a kūmara plant to five wonderful recipients in November. Everyone was surprised and delighted to be recognised and told us wonderful stories about their mahi and its impact, some of which we captured on video.

This year we want to develop the Kūmara Awards further and we are really happy to see others are interested too. We invite you to join us for a conversation about next steps for the Kūmara Awards.

- Should they be regional or national?

- How do placemaking projects get nominated?

- How do are winners chosen?

- What might the categories be?

- How can we use these awards to raise awareness of placemaking, make it more visible in the media, draw attention to the wonderful initiatives happening across the country and how we can involve more people into placemaking?

- and other questions, thoughts and ideas you might have...

Join us! People from all cities, towns, villages, neighbourhoods and communities are welcome!

When: 5 May, 12-1 pm
