Offering fast, accurate phase hybrid autofocus, the LUMIX S5IIX has a 24.2MP 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor that complies with PDAF with Active I.S.to support walking shots, and an imaging engine with high resolution, natural description, and approximately 2x higher-speed signal processing for high bit-rate video recording. 5.8K Pro-Res, Pro-Res internal, RAW over HDMI, Wireless/Wired IP streaming.

The L Mount Alliance is established between Panasonic, Leica Camera and SIGMA, setting the stage for a new level of freedom and choice for creators around the globe. The unified lens mount standard has now also been adopted by DJI.

LUMIX enters the full frame game with LUMIX S1, S1R and SH, propelling themselves into a market hungry for resolution, dynamic range, color and detail. LUMIX S1R was launched with the highest resolution sensor available in the full frame mirrorless market, while the S1H took full frame mirrorless video capability to a whole new level.

When the LUMIX S5 hit the market in 2020 it very quickly built up a reputation as the best-value full frame hybrid camera on the market. The S5 is smaller and lighter than most others in its class, and is jam packed with photo and video features to appeal to creators of all kinds. Since it's launch, the S5's reputation has continued to skyrocket.

LUMIX launches it's first box style full frame camera, following the success of the BGH1 micro four-thirds box camera. The small, durable, versatile camera is notably Netflix-approved, making it a very powerful, very affordable, cinema camera for filmmakers.

The approximately 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor is equivalent to that of the LUMIX S5II, and the latest engine captures content in rich detail with natural tones. The full-frame sensors also deliver stunning results, even in low light conditions and offers cinematic quality, with a beautiful bokeh effect. The camera is additionally equipped with PDAF (Phase Detection Auto-Focus), providing excellent subject tracking, as well as Active I.S., which significantly reduces blurring from camera shake even when shooting handheld, allowing users to shoot content confidently, in any situation and environment

Designed with the creative smartphone user in mind, the LUMIX S9 also grants users a range of popular, classic or bespoke color styles in-camera with the popular REAL TIME LUT function via a new dedicated button on the camera body. Furthermore, with the new LUMIX Lab app creators can develop their own unique LUT color files on their smartphone. Through these features, one can effortlessly generate original and shareable stills and videos without the need of post-production editing on a computer, expanding the scope of creative possibilities. The speed of transferring data from camera to smartphone has also been improved with the new app and the ability to pair it with a LUMIX camera.

The LUMIX S9 also introduces a new recording format: MP4 Lite. Shooting Open Gate in 4:2:0 10 bit in 30p/25p, creators can capture high quality videos in the optimum format for smartphone, and easily resize aspect ratios to suit social media with the LUMIX Lab app. With this new streamlined editing workflow, content creators can easily shoot and share while on the go.

It really is meant to be a small camera. It is very small in your hand. We have a grip on it here from Small Rig which allows you to hold it a little better. But I think the genius of this camera is just that it is very small. You can carry it with you. It is very much a street camera, which allows you to shoot and be very stealth with it.

Great lenses, we have a small pancake lens here. They just announced this 26mm f/8 pancake lens, which is super fun and manual focus. And they also announced an 18-40mm f/4.5-6.3 lens that will be coming later.

So it turns your camera a little bit into a phone. Yeah, a little bit, almost, a little bigger though. Bigger than your phone, slightly larger. And a 24 megapixel full frame sensor, which is a little nicer than your phone.

We been shooting the 28-200mm on this, which has been pretty fun. Because it just went to 309mm in the video mode and still in 4k. So, all right, great features, something to look at and understand. You just need to set it up and know how to use it. Once you get used to it I think it really can be really useful for you.

But an additional frustration was their decision to start producing full-frame cameras. At the time I was very unhappy, thinking they should keep their eye on the ball with their micro four-thirds system.

When the S1 and S1R were announced, I was very surprised at the immense size of both cameras. Not just a larger sensor but a very large camera to go with it. I have no idea what inspired Lumix engineers to design such a large body when compared to other full-frame models. Both cameras received good to excellent reviews except for their autofocus systems and large dimensions. But overall, they were considered well-designed cameras with terrific image quality in both stills and video. Generally speaking, they were an interesting first step into the full-frame market. But the large size and weight hampered their success immensely.

When I heard this camera was being released I called my good friend and fellow Lumix fan Mark Toal. Mark and I worked together when I was a Lumix Ambassador. I knew Mark would have the inside scoop, and in fact, he produced a short video to give us a little better idea of what the new camera is all about. He also supplied all the still images in this blog post.

Another video you might enjoy seeing was produced by Gerald Undon. Gerald is a Canadian that produces the most in-depth videos you can imagine. I can only guess at the production time it takes to do one of his review videos. Below is his take on the new camera.

The underlying reason of course is the general move up to full frame for everyone, or at least to APS-C (though after M4/3 goes, APS-C will be next on the hitlist, with smartphones snapping at its heels).

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the M4/3 sensor as we all know(!), but as marketing has taught us, reality does not matter: it is how the sensor is perceived by the camera-buying public that counts.

I made these examples with the Lumix S1. It shows the normal superresolution on the left, and the superresolution with movement correction on the right. This is also available in the Lumix S5 and it works surprisingly good.

Do you have a lot of dynamic range? Just expose for the highlights and lift the shadows in post. The Lumix S5 makes it possible without a lot of quality loss.
