Hi Playwood,

As you probably know, LHS may be moving to Ujima House (Wembley), and with this comes a new Wood workshop.

What would you like to see in it and what tools do you think should be available?

Kind regards,
Henry.

Hey Henry,

Great news on the move and thanks for all the effort!

Happy to share my 2p on a workshop based on what I used most. I guess other views will differ.

1. Benches! Obvious but it's very limiting to work without one
2. Playwood locker contents. These were all sent for storage and should be available, the previous system of inductions and shared keycode worked well IMO. Access via card would be better.
3. Table saw
4. Router table
5. Pillar drill
6. Lathe
7. Disc sander
8. Dust extraction
9. Powertools (drills, circular saws, jigsaw, etc)

We had all of the above in Hackney so hopefully they'll make it to Wembley also. My fantasy hackspace wood shop would also include ...

10. Bandsaw
11. Planer / Thicknesser combo or individual machines

Looking forward to seeing the new space!

Matt

Bandsaw always seemed like a must-have to me but we had 2 or 3 attempts to acquire one and never found anyone willing to pledge for it or even work on it.

I'm forced to assume that almost nobody wants one.

Wembley is a bit of an arse for me to get to, so I probably won't be a regular in the new space, but I'll throw my 2c in anyway.

Firstly, I do like the list from Matt and I think it covers most of the bases. I have to admit, I was always very surprised that hackspace didn't have a bandsaw, as this is definitely feels like a standard piece of kit.  The other item that's not on the list that I would personally like would be a belt sander.  And of course some decent extraction.

Whilst a planer / thicknesser would be nice too, I seem to recall being told that we'd had one previously but it's blades were perpetually being destroyed by callous users, and that it wasn't economical to keep replacing them.  So, unless we are going to be AC-noding things in the wood shop (which I'm not opposed to), it's probably not an option.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what the new space will look like though.

I agree with all this (having all the previous stuff, plus lockers to store the nice things in, including the grinder for the lathe tools) as well as extraction and a slightly better set up of the machines, if possible. It was always a bit disturbing to be working the lathe and then to get sprayed with dust from the table saw. Not to mention being in line for things coming out of the table saw.

I'm also in agreement with Matthew's list.

If at all possible, we really need proper extraction: a single system for the whole woodshop, with permanent, gated ducting running to all machines. The easier we can make extraction, the more likely people are to use it.

AC Nodes for most of the fixed machines would also be a huge plus, even if they're just set to logging. This might make it possible to have a planer or thicknesser: submit a deposit in order to to use them, inspect the blades before each use, if ruined, set the machine out of order and the person who used it last loses their deposit. That's vastly oversimplified, but it brings about the possibility of some accountability.

Hello,

I'm so looking forward to the reopening of the workshop. I have a crib to make for my first baby!.

I am also in agreement to all has been listed so far. I would like to stress that a thickner would be very useful for people reclaiming wood like most of us.

As for the extraction system, I also fully support it. Is this not something 2-3 of us could do over a day or two as part of the workshop setup? We do not need very much but for a few rigid and flexible pipes, assuming we still have the extractor we had in Hackney. I'd be happy to contribute with my time to work on this.

I think we'd need to have some form of metal detector or the like if we're going to use reclaimed wood.

Hi Henry,

I have just rejoined the HS as I have moved right down the road from the new location (by chance).

Just popped down there and seen that the place hasn't been set up yet.

Im keen to get involved in setting things up, Is there someone I should chat to? I have heard that the contractors need to install 3 phase power to the workshop and wires need to be pulled. Keen to help out, as I have a load of projects I would like to get working on.

Cheers,

J
